Anthony Muhammad, PhD, is a much sought-after consultant. A practitioner for nearly 20 years, he has served as a middle school teacher, assistant principal, and principal, and as a high school principal. His Transforming School Culture approach explores the root causes of staff resistance to change.
Dr. Muhammad’s tenure as a practitioner has earned him several awards as both a teacher and a principal. His most notable accomplishment came as principal of Levey Middle School in Southfield, Michigan, a National School of Excellence, where student proficiency on state assessments more than doubled in five years. Dr. Muhammad and the staff at Levey used the Professional Learning Communities at Work™ process for school improvement, and they have been recognized in several videos and articles as a model high-performing PLC.
As a researcher, Dr. Muhammad has published articles in several publications in both the United States and Canada.
Work with your colleagues in grade level or content area alike groups!
Rock Hill teachers have expressed the desire to work collaboratively with their colleagues teaching on the same grade level or content area. This summer Dr. Pew is making that desire a reality. Teachers throughout the District will have the opportunity to learn and work together in grade level or content specific teams. An important work of a Professional Learning Community is to answer the first instructional question, what do the students need to know and be able to do? Because there are so many standards, teachers must discern and prioritize the standards essential for a child to learn. We must answer the questions; does this standard have endurance, leverage and readiness for the next level of learning? Out of our essentials, specific learning targets will be identified. The essential learning standards are also used to determine the level of mastery required of each student.
This past year, all elementary, middle, and high school teachers were asked to compile the “essential learning” standards required in each grade level and content area. After much hard work and effort, schools completed the task. However, many teachers were left wondering if they identified the “correct” standards. Teachers asked, how does our “essentials” stack up to the other schools “essentials”? The Essential Learning Workshop will allow teachers to look at neighboring schools’ “essentials” to help refine their essentials. As Mike Mattos says so succinctly, “We are not making a list. It is a process!” This summer workshop provides the perfect opportunity to participate in that important process.
