St. Patrick Catholic School
Principal's Weekly Newsletter
DECEMBER 2, 2021
As we walk through this Advent season, I ask that we all take the lead from our 7th and 8th grade students and spread kindness. This year, even more than in other years, we have people in our families, school, and community that are struggling with financial, personal health, and mental health concerns. We have decided to move ahead with our normal seasonal events and concerts. As we all know, these events are well attended and often very crowded. With the recent uptick in positive COVID cases, I would ask spectators to consider wearing masks to these events to protect the vulnerable who may be attending.
I am sorry to share that our part-time bus driver Craig Cohea passed last week. Craig was such a kind man and loved our students very much. He enjoyed juggling for them and talking with them when he subbed or drove our bus. The family is planning a private service for him. Please pray for his family and may Craig rest in peace.
Please remember that you may drop students off in our express lane in front of school, or you may park on a side street and walk your child to the playground. We ask that you do not park in the bus lane on the side of school on 7th Street, as this makes it impossible for our bus drivers to safely drop students and park their buses for the day.
Blessings,
Lynette Hackett
Principal
FAITH
Yesterday our 3rd-8th grade students participated in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Father asked students to reflect on their choices and repent for their mistakes. We thank God for his mercy and the strength we receive through Reconciliation.
EXCELLENCE
Our teachers work hard to prepare lessons that keep students engaged in their learning. Mrs. Schmitt's science class investigated what it takes to keep the ecosystem intact and going through a food-chain game. The goal was to change variables to create a sustainable ecosystem. What a creative learning experience!
SERVICE
St. Patrick students did an outstanding job sharing their service learning projects with Kamryn Ryan and Jana Daisy from the Iowa Task Force on Service Learning. Kamryn and Jana visited our school to learn more about how service learning can be implemented in a K-8 building. They were very impressed with the level of engagement our students had in identifying needs and working to solve problems.
THIS WEEKEND'S ACTVITIES
Saturday Dec. 4: Cookies and Cocoa with Santa following 5 PM Mass.
Join us for fun activities led by our students, take photos with Santa, and support Mrs. Kjeldsen's class's service learning project with a free will donation for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. Enter through the double glass doors on the playground.
Sunday Dec. 5: K-2 Christmas Concert at 2 PM (doors open at 1:30 PM)
This year's concert is in Dutcher Gym. The classroom wish list tree will be up. Take an ornament or click here if you'd like to purchase an item for a classroom.
ST. NICK'S SECRET SHOP
CPTO is sponsoring our traditional St. Nick's Secret Shop Dec. 6-10. Families will receive a detailed note today with a shopping list that must be completed and brought back to school on Monday. Students may shop for $2 gifts that will go home wrapped and tagged. Younger students will have assistance in making their "secret" purchases.
Parent volunteers are needed for Tue., Wed., and Thur. mornings (see times on the sheet) to assist students with shopping, wrapping, and collecting money. If you are able to provide this service to our school community contact Meagan Slee.
