The Mustang Minute
Week of October 25th
FROM THE PRINCIPALS' OFFICES
Greetings Mustang Families!
We hope this issue of the Mustang Minute finds you enjoying this gorgeous fall weather! Hopefully you have now had several pumpkin spice lattes and lit some fall scented candles around the house.
And...on that note, don't forget that FALL FEST is right around the corner!! We hope you'll join us in the fun TOMORROW, October 23rd, from 12-3pm for a celebration of fall! Trunk or Treat, Inflatables, crafts, games, a haunted classroom, costumes, music, hay rides, and a pumpkin patch are just a FEW of the awesome activities we have for our Brookwood families and friends to enjoy. The best part is it only costs $3 per person or $10 per family to join in the fun.
Next week is also Parent Teacher Conferences. Parents and guardians can choose their preferred format: phone, virtual meet, or in-person. Our Sign Up Genius is now closed, but you can still call the main office at your child's school if you have not yet reserved an appointment time. So that we can best reach as many families as possible, all conferences require an appointment, and appointment slots will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
Looking forward to seeing a lot of our Brookwood families this week!
Mr. Braden & Mrs. Franz

Halloween Festivities
Halloween Dress Up Day: Students are welcome to dress up in their Halloween costumes on Thursday, October 28th. We ask that you do not send any props with your child’s costume to school.
Please consider the following if sending your child to school in a costume:
-Can my child sit at a desk comfortably and/or participate in class in the costume?
-Can my child independently take a bathroom break in this costume?
-Is this costume school appropriate?
Shared Candy/Treats: If you are planning on sending in candy or treats with your child to share with the class, we do require them to be store bought and individually packaged. Please leave the treats in the sealed large container/bag. Our staff will distribute the individually packaged items to the class. Any items that were made or handled at home cannot be distributed to classmates.
We want this to be a fun day for the kids. The teachers have several themed activities planned in each classroom. We appreciate your cooperation.
Black Light Art Show
Mrs. Horak’s will be hosting an Art Show at BES during Parent Teacher Conferences October 27th and 28th. The theme is Outer Space. Come and take a walk through the art room that has been transformed into a glowing outer space, filled with fun and creative aliens, rockets, and shooting stars made by our BES artists!
October is Bullying Prevention Month!
October is World Bullying Prevention Month! Here is what is happening in our schools.
BES & BMS:
- Greatness Task: Got a Facebook, Snapchat, or Cell phone? Find a way to use technology to spread some kindness and positivity! Text someone a compliment, post an encouraging quote or poem, or tell someone thank you. If you don’t have your own device, ask a parent if you can use theirs ro do this.
- Parent/Child Bullying Conversation Sheets: If you haven't already, talk with your student, sign, and return bottom of form to the office at your child's school. We are extending the due date for these sheets to Thursday, October 28th!
- Bullying Prevention Project Contest: We are calling on ALL students to harness their creative juices to make a project promoting friendship, support, and togetherness. The theme is "Growing Greatness through Kindness and Inclusion." Instructions were sent home with students this past Tuesday. Click the button below to view an electronic version.
BES: As part of our developmental guidance curriculum, students are taught what bullying is and is not. Here is what they have learned:
Bullying IS hurtful words or behaviors towards one or more people that are:
- (1) Purposeful
- (2) Occurring over and over
- (3) Contain an imbalance of power (example: older bullying younger, bigger bullying smaller, popular bullying unpopular, several bullying one…)
Bullying is not:
- A Disagreement/Argument - It’s normal for people to disagree or even have arguments. A disagreement or argument might happen over and over, but are usually not purposeful and there is no imbalance of power/feeling powerless during a disagreement or argument.
- An Unfair Situation - Life is not fair . Someone might not share a toy with you or skip in front of you in line. These things are not nice, but they are not bullying. Unfair situations do not tend to happen over and over, they are not purposeful, and they do not leave someone powerless
- A Mean Moment - Everyone has bad days and sometimes people take things out on others or lose their temper. It’s not nice to say mean things to people, but it’s not always bullying. A mean moment is probably done with some purpose, but it would not happen over and over and it would not leave the other person feeling powerless.
BMS:
Students in grades 4/5 reviewed what bullying IS and IS NOT. In small groups, they then brainstormed some behaviors that bullies might employ and rank ordered the severity of each of the behaviors using a "thermometer." Next week, each group will be presenting their thermometers to the whole class, and students will discuss strategies on how to be "upstanders."
This week, ALL BMS students will be participating in grade level assemblies with guest speakers, Chief Balog and Officer Bappert from the Genoa City PD. Topics will include internet safety, harassment, and cyberbullying. Please contact your child's homeroom teacher if you prefer that your child NOT partake in the assembly.
