WHAT'S HAPPENING AT SPES?
EXCITING NEWS IN THE PREK LEARNING GARDEN
Our PreK friends have been hard at work in their Learning Gardens. Their focus this season is on "Butterfly Gardens" and everyone has been watching for the first signs of caterpillars. Last week, Ms. Debbie's class excitedly called Ms. Rachel to tell her that "IZZY" the caterpillar had been spotted! Upon closer look, Ms. Rachel and Ms. Debbie found a second caterpillar, both on milkweed plants. They also SPOTTED AN EGG...or what they think is an egg! Upon consulting with the Lafayette Garden Club member who has assisted with this effort, Ms. Rachel received the following response:
Congratulations! The caterpillars are from the Monarch butterflies which visited your garden several weeks ago. The life cycle is a fast one. Plant several fennel plants and check daily for the chrysalis. The caterpillars usually spin the chrysalis away from the food source. Twigs, large leaves and even the sides of the raised beds are good places to watch.
Great job!
At present, our students are on the lookout for new baby caterpillars and chrysalis! We wanted to share this special news with you to let you know just how much fun learning is at SPES! The old days of strictly sitting in a desk, listening to lecture and taking notes is LONG GONE!!! Stay tuned for our "Baby Announcement" as well as future updates on Izzy and friends.
