J. W. Leary Junior High School
September 2, 2021
Hello everyone,
Welcome to a New School Year JH Families.
I hope the summer has been relaxing and restful. School starts tomorrow!!! 1 Sleep away.
Staff has been back for a couple of days now and have been working hard to prepare for the return of our students. We couldn't be more excited to see this place full of students again.
Of course as we start this year we are aware of Covid and the Delta Variant and will be following CDC and DOH guidance about how to mitigate risk in school. Our main priority is getting all students back into school on a daily basis and making sure they are safe in the process.
In spite of Covid, we are thrilled to get back to work. We know that the last 18 months has not been easy on our families and has certainly impacted the education of our students. We are committed in this new school year to do all we can to help address the learning loss created by the pandemic and we are equally committed to keeping our students and staff safe.
At this time, we are optimistic for some normalcy. We look forward to having every student back in school; they have been missed! 2021-2022 supply lists are linked below.
For the first day of school, tomorrow, Friday September 3, 2021, no materials are needed.
After school has been a a big question; at this point we will have after school until 3pm. I do ask that you please take a moment to complete this survey (also placed below) regarding what you/your child would like for after school activities.
I know many questions about this upcoming year remain; as information becomes available it will be shared.

The drop off loop for children coming to school by car is off of Highland Park. Children will need to walk around to the front door that will be open by 7:15 for children that will come into the cafeteria to get breakfast.
During busy times drop off is at the orange cone.

Bus Routes
Please note, for pick up points in the village, students should be at the pick up points nearest their residence. All students should be ready and waiting at least 10 minutes prior to pick up. If you have questions call 764-3700, EXT 3020.
Walking Boundaries:
The only times available are what times the busses leave the garage to start their route. Based on that information and following the stops, that would be a great way to find your approximate timing to be at the bus stop. They cannot give definite times so I would definitely have your child there earlier rather than later until you get a better feel of what time the bus keeps showing up.

Attendance
We at JW Leary Junior High School believe that consistent attendance at school is imperative to attain a thorough and complete education. It is important that students be in school on time each day in order to be presented with academic material that will help them grow as a student. We also recognize that there are circumstances in a child’s life that may require them to miss school occasionally. These tardies or absences are understandable and accepted as long as the occurrence doesn’t become frequent.
It is a school-wide goal at JW Leary Junior High School to improve student attendance. In order for parents to assist us with this school-wide goal, we ask that parents make every effort to schedule family vacations during our school breaks. In addition, we ask that parents schedule students’ doctor’s appointments after school as much as possible. When students are signed out of school early, they miss valuable instructional time and could begin to fall behind academically when leaving early becomes excessive.
School starts at 7:30 AM. Students who arrive in their classrooms after these times are reported to the main office as tardy for school. Absences are identified by a student being out of school for an entire day. Both of these attendance measures are forwarded to a database where we keep track of attendance for each child. When a student is absent from school, the nurse’s office will call the child’s home to make sure that the parent is aware of the child’s absence in order to ensure the child’s safety.
The expectation at JW Leary Junior High School is that parents will forward, in writing, a note that includes the date(s), student’s name and explanation of absence or that parents will complete this Form. We keep these notes on file in the office.
Each week an attendance check is done on all of our children. In addition to sending attendance information with progress reports and report cards additional letters may be sent if problems arise.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help your student or your family as we get back into school.
I could not be more proud to be Principal at such a great school in such a strong community.
