Second Grade Study Trip

We are so excited to start this new year (semester) learning about our local community through the world of commerce. Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, February 6, 7, or 8, we are going to Castleton Square Mall to learn more about producers, consumers, goods, and services. Students will explore the world of retail by identifying whether stores provide goods and/or services, use cardinal directions on a map, and enjoy a meal at Buca Di Beppo®.

Study Trip to Flat Fork Creek

Don't forget that we will be heading to Flat Fork Creek next Friday!! We will plan to leave TCE at 9:30 and we will be back at TCE around 11:20! Please make sure to watch the weather for this day so that your child is dressed appropriately. No need to pack a sack lunch as we will eat at school during our normal lunch time. We are looking forward to a fun day!!!

Report cards were posted today! Please check Skyward to see your child's quarter two assessment. Please let me know if you have any questions at all!

MealViewer App

MealViewer is an app that parents can use to view our school menu, nutrition, and allergen information. The app is simple to set up and even easier to use. You will just need to go to your App Store and download "MealViever To Go".

STEAM Night

Mark your calendars for our TCE FAMILY STEAM NIGHT on Thursday,
January 31 from 5:30-7:00 pm. STEAM is an educational term to describe real-world opportunities for students to learn with science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. At the TCE Family STEAM Night, TCE students and their family members of all ages are welcome to come and participate in a variety of unique, educational STEAM experiences. Participants will travel as a family (children with their adults) to share in the learning process! Pizza and water will be available in the cafeteria for families to purchase. We hope to see you there!

Please consider sending a snack to school with your child each day. Our approved list (to keep all of our Cardinals safe - especially those living with food allergies) include:

Optional Spelling Practice at Home

On Tuesday, a new set of words were sent home with your child. We will work with these words for two weeks at a time. Feel free to practice these sorts at home! Also, I will not be giving spelling tests over these words this year, but rather check with each student by checking to see if they can spell the words based on their spelling patterns.

Repeated Sort: Students will sort their words. Then check their words using the answer key. Then sort their words again!

Draw and Label: Students choose 10 of their words. Then they will draw a picture of each world and label it.

Blind Sort: Using given guide words, or headers, students spell or write in words in the correct category as a partner calls each word aloud without showing it.

Writing Sort: Students write their words under the correct category.

Speed Sort: Students sort words quickly under the correct categories (use a timer to see how fast they can do it!) Students love to beat records and to set goals for themselves.

Word Hunt: Students hunt through their own reading and writing for words that are additional examples of the sound, pattern, or meaning unit they study!

Buddy Sort: Using the given headers, students sort their words with a partner, then discuss. They will then check their work with their answer key.

Background Checks & Anti-Bullying Video

All who desire to volunteer, chaperone fieldtrips, or eat lunch in the cafeteria must have an approved background check on file and complete the Anti-bullying video. Background checks are good for 3 years. If you have questions about your background check, please contact the TCE office @ (317) 594-4310.

We are Learning

Reading

This weekend in reading we continued reviewing and learning how to identify non-fiction text features and how they impact our reading. More specially, we learned that readers of non-fiction can expect certain pieces of information to be reviewed in a book about a certain topic. However, there will be "surprises," or new pieces of unexpected information, that we will read that will change how we think about the topic being reviewed. This change in thinking means we are learning.

Writing

This week we continued finishing and celebrating our original non-fiction books. The students have worked hard and are now finished with their non-fiction books. Please go to your child's Seesaw profile to see him/her read his/her original non-fiction book. Next week we will start our opinion based writing unit. I am very much looking forward to what each student feels strongly enough about to persuade others to think differently!

Math

This week in math students reviewed subtraction (with and without borrowing), demonstrating various amounts of money in various ways, and finding missing variables within a number sentence. With a rotation of the aforementioned subjects being reviewed, our main focus was on missing variables within a story problem. This week students learned that sometimes story problems will give the reader a sum or difference and the reader will have to solve to find the missing part. (For example: _x_ + 12 = 53)

Word Work

On Tuesday, students received a new set of spelling words. In class, we will work on different sorts and activities to practice our spelling patterns. We will study these words for the next two weeks. Here are a list of word sorts that we do in class. Feel free to practice these words at home as well!

Social Studies

Second grade will be studying economics over the coming weeks. We will deepen our understanding of goods vs. services, consumers vs. producers, needs vs. wants, and human, capital, and natural resources. We will culminate our study of economics with a study trip to Castleton Mall in February..
