Which Way
Investigate
New Unit: Which Way
Students Name: Dina Ung
Grade: 8
Subject: Technology
Unit Title: WHICH WAY?
Significant Concept: Giving directions and following instructions
Unit Question: How can technology help us give directions?
Technology Branch: systems/information
Approaches To Learning Skills Used: Communication
Identify The Problem
Context: Every day millions of instructions are given to people. Unfortunately, most of these instructions are either forgotten or misinterpreted, leading to mistakes and a need to have the instructions repeated. Teachers, manager, students and leaders all need to learn how to give instructions in a way that makes them crystal clear, concise and actionable.
Challenge/Task
Challenges: My small group will investigate the art of giving directions and instructions and design, plan and create a website that features:
1. A home page that explain the contents of the website, purpose of project and team members
2. A outline of a QR Code treasure hunt for MYP students
3. A step-by-step instructional guide (using text and still image)s on how to create an animated gif
4. A cooking video
5. A series of (4-6) motivational animated GIFs about “direction”
Group Members & Team Animal
Our team animal is PANDA, and the team members are Sereirath, Sophie, Erica and myself.
Game
Objective:
For the group to learn each others names. As people are eliminated they will have to learn the names of different persons on their left or right until only two participants remain for the final duel.
INSTRUCTIONS
Circle up: All participants stand in a circle facing each other.
Introduce: Go around the circle having everyone introduce themselves by name.
Ready-Aim: Everyone makes a gun with their hands by interlocking the fingers together and pointing out their two index fingers.
BANG BANG: The game begins by the facilitator calling out the name of someone in the group. That person must quickly duck (squat down). The two people on either side of the person whose name was called fire their guns at him by pointing their guns in his direction and saying “Bang-Bang! You're Dead”.
Eliminate: If the named participant does not duck in time then he is the one shot dead and is eliminated. If he ducks in time, the participant on either his left or right who gets shot first is eliminated. Whoever is shot must dramatically die and then sits down in the centre of the circle and calls the next name. The game continues until only two participants remain.
Last Duel: When there are only two people left, they should stand back to back in the center of an open space. The facilitator then begins slowly counting from 1. With each number, the participants take one step forward. As soon as the facilitator skips a number, the two participants must turn around and shoot each other– “Bang-Bang You’re dead.” Whoever shoots first is the overall winner.

I came up with my own instructions after playing the game, and here it is:
MY VERSION OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR BANG
GAME: Bang
How To Play:
Start off by standing in a circle, with one person standing in the center of the circle. The person in the center calls out a name of a person in the circle, the person that gets called has to squad down quick, and the two people on both sides of that person has to say BANG, with their hands making a gun shape pointing to that person as fast as they can, the one who says BANG quicker remains alive and the slower one dies. If the person who gets called doesn’t squad down quick, that person dies. When a person says BANG or squads down when they are not supposed to, they die. The person in the middle continues to call out a person’s name until there are only two people left. When there are only two people left, they should stand back to back, the person in the center calls out numbers, when the person skips a number, the faster to shoot and say BANG wins.
COMPARE and CONTRAST: my instructions and the official instructions
Both my instructions and the official instructions talked about basic rules, how to play, how people get eliminated and how the game starts. But the official one is obviously more clear and more organized. I think people will be more patient reading the official one than my version, because my instructions are stuck together in one big chunk and readers might feel bored. On the contrary, the official one is very organized. It is divided into different sections, which makes it easier to read and understand. The rules I wrote are also not really clear enough, it should be more detailed to make it easier to understand.
QR Codes research:
I did research with my team all about QR codes and our research can be seen by scanning the QR code below.
HOW I MADE MY QR CODE
Step 1: go to this website: qrcode.kaywa.com
Step 2: copy the URL of your information or the text into the website
Step 3: click generate
Step 4: download the QR code
Step 5: scan and check if the QR code shows the right thing
White Tigers' Game
How to play:
First, find a partner or form a group. One person has to start by saying a location, a city, a country, any place. Then, the next person has to say a name of a location that starts with the letter that was the last letter of the location the first person said within 10 seconds. If that person fails to say it within 10 seconds, the person dies. The game goes on until there's only one person left, and that last person that survives is the winner. For example: if the first person says Korea, then the next person should say a location that starts with the letter A, Australia/America/Africa/Afghanistan. Then, if the next person says Afghanistan, the next person should say a location that starts with the letter N, New york/Norway/Northbridge etc.
Evaluation On The White Tigers' Instruction
I wasn't at school when the class played the game, I went to Zaman for registering for the math puzzle contest, and I learned the game from my group.

10 FAVORITE QUOTES
I also did research on quotes about leadership and found ten that I like. Here are the quotes:
- “To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart.”
― Eleanor Roosevelt - “Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others.”
― Robert Louis Stevenson - “The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.”
― Ronald Reagan - “Don't tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results.” ― George S. Patton Jr.
“Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.” ― Dwight D. Eisenhower
“He who cannot be a good follower cannot be a good leader.” ― Aristotle
“Leaders must be close enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate them.”
― John C. Maxwell“A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage tomake tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equalities of his actions and the integrity of his intent.” —Douglas MacArthur
“Whatever you are, be a good one.” —Abraham Lincoln
- “Management is doing things right; leadership is going the right things.” — Peter F. Drucker, Essential Drucker: Management, the Individual and Society

Hanbeen's group's game:
This game requires players to get into partners. The two people have to sit on one chair each facing each other, then one person open his/her legs, and another person put his/her legs in between the legs of that person. The players get to decide who puts the legs in between and who opens the legs. Then, the person who opens his/her legs has to use the most energy his/her could use to keep the legs of the other person closed. And the person who puts his/her legs in between has to try his/her best to keep his/her own legs open and open the other person's legs wider. The person who stays until the end wins.
I think their group didn't explain well. First, they didn't talk to the whole class, but only to a few people, and the instructions they gave were not clear. The good thing they did is that they showed example of how the game looks like and how it works. If I didn't know the game before, I don't think I will be able to understand the game with the instructions they gave. I knew the game before so I know what to do after listening to the unclear instructions. They can do better by speaking louder to the whole class and make the instructions clear and easy to understand, and also at the same time show example.
Panda Game (Dina, Sophie, Erica, Sereirath)
This game requires many people, the more people the more fun the game will be. First, find a group of people to play this game. Each person has to have a chair and everyone sits in a circle. One person has to be the judge, when the judge says start, one person has to start by saying 'ONE' and stand up at the same time. Then the next person stands up and say 'TWO' at the same time. Then the next person continues, everyone has to say the numbers in order, if anyone skips a number or says a number that is not in order, then that person is out. Also, if two people say the same number at the same time, then both of them are out. The people who are out have to get out of the circle. When someone is out, the people who are left start the game over. The game continues until there is one person left at the end, and that person is the winner.
We didn't make the instructions really clear, but the game is quite simple so everyone gets the game after the first round practice game. We had fun and enjoyed the game. We learned that
- with showing examples of how to play any game, it makes it easier for the players who don't know the game
- explaining it in details make people understand the game faster and more accurately
- to make the game better, we can adjust small details, and change some rules
TESTING METHOD
Testing date: 25th May 2014
