Not so scary STAAR prep!
Alas it is testing season again. This time of year is usually stressful for all involved. Students, teachers, and all staff are involved in the preparation for all manner of tests this semester. The culmination of all of our hard work is shown this time of year.
The test itself is not at all fun for students. One would be hard pressed to find a student who would claim that they love STAAR and ACP testing. Even though the test is not fun, we as teachers can find new and creative ways to prepare for the test giving students opportunities to show off their learned skills in different ways.
- Ms. Gill plays a “ZAP” game where students relay passage questions and earn points for their teams.
- Mrs. Horne is able to use All in Learning data on weekly mastery quizzes to immediately pull a small group in the second half of class. She can go over students’ thinking process when answering the questions.
- Ms. Clark plays a poetry review game where students can hit the buzzer to earn “Clark Dollars.”
- Mr. Babeu plays games where students are able to shoot baskets in his Nerf hoop.
Needless to say ELAR teachers can find some really creative ways to make test prep fun. We are always willing to share these ideas and if you know of any more, let us know.
- Send text and picture to Mrs. Taylor via email.
- Subject line must include Spotlight.
- Due by every Friday, 5pm.

Was the word LOVE?
Spotlight on SLPD Facilitators
I want to say a very special thank you to our SLPD session leaders - Ms. Burns, Ms. Grieb, Ms. Parambath, Ms. Hunt, Ms. Hawkins, and Ms. Barksdale. In the midst of their day they took time to coordinate a very engaging and relevant session for the staff. The feedback was wonderful and I thank you all tremendously.
I want to also thank the IC's for putting together a tremendous opportunity for us to build our connections through the fun Scavenger Hunt activity.
Also, thank you to Ms. Walker and Mrs. Linwood for contributing to the daily schedule discussion and helping to frame our thinking as we look at the change for next year.
The data meetings were seen as time well spent- appreciation to the ICs, Administrators, and teachers for ensuring that it was targeted and data based next steps were developed.

Thank you IC's for your contributions to ARSA Institute
Spotlight on POD 8 A
I would like to thank and show my appreciation to my fellow Pod members of Pod 8A.
They have helped me create a Masters Club that recognizes the achievement of our students. As Ms. Burns so eloquently wrote, “Students that are part of the ‘Masters Club’ have earned the level of Mastery according to STAAR standards on 6 week Common Assessments. This means that they demonstrate a strong understanding of the subject material and are well prepared for success in the future.”
The Masters Club has grown each 6 weeks and currently contains 65 members who have achieved Mastery on one or more Common Assessment. We have several students who achieved Mastery in more than one subject and for more than one 6 weeks.
Mr. Getz, Ms. Santos, and Ms. Burns quickly assess their Mastery students and email me the names before I even have to ask every six weeks so that I can award the students with cake.
Ms. Burns has compiled a bulletin board with every student’s picture and achievements per subject for all to see. I am proud of the recognition we have given the students and know that it provides motivation that attributes to the growth of Masters Club. I am also, of course, very proud our Students. The support I get from Mr. Getz, Ms. Burns, and Ms. Santos has been outstanding.
Additional Note from Ms. Taylor - I remember speaking to members of POD A in the hallway after school and they shared their desire to highlight exceptional student achievement and talked about a "Masters Club". I want to say thank you Ms. Grieb and team for taking something that was a conversation and making it a reality. This is always wonderful to see! We are a young school and new traditions are forming - I hope that this is a tradition that will continue and expand.
Spotlight on Mrs. Zapata, Ms. Garcia, Mrs. Parada, and Ms. Cardenas
In the world of counseling, the spring is a very busy time for us with the transition of our incoming and outgoing students, magnet school applications, meetings and getting our students to finish the year strong both academically and socially.
During this time of year we are swamped with parent phone calls regarding students, meetings and so much more. At this time the counselors would like to send a huge "THANK YOU" to Ms. Garcia, Mrs. Parada and Mrs. Zapata and Ms. Cardenas for always handling our parents and visitors so gracefully and professionally. We appreciate you!!
ARSA Counselors!
Spotlight on Mrs. Linwood & Mrs. Crabtree
Creativity is alive and well during 6th grade lunch. As we all know, we have been experiencing some very nasty weather and students have had to stay inside, due to cold or rain.
Mrs. Linwood and Mrs. Crabtree have definitely employed the Creativity in our 4 C's. Students participated in a Cup Challenge last week during lunch and their peers cheered them on (see the video in the Good New Section below). It was a simple and fun way to engage students and help them exert some energy inside the building. It was wonderful to see the 6th graders cheer each other on and then transition smoothly into going back to class.
The rumor is there is more to come....
Thank you and it has inspired me to start a Lunch Games basket!!
Spotlight on Mrs. Zapata, Ms. Cardenas, and Mrs. Tovar
When asked to help with a task great or small, Mrs. Zapata is always there for me and our campus. A tremendous spotlight and thank you to Mrs. Zapata!!
She thinks of the school at all times and will go above and beyond to ensure that things are accomplished. When asked to coordinate our luncheon after a change had to be made, she did not hesitate and was reassuring. She coordinated what needed to be done and our other staff members stepped up.
Ms. Cardenas and Ms. Tovar my appreciation for how you jumped in, did not pause and worked as a team to provide lunch and smiles to our staff in honor of African American Heritage month.
