PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Greetings Waverley Families!
Having students back in the building has been everything we hoped it would be. The school is buzzing with laughter, learning, and excitement! Teachers are doing their very best to make our virtual students and our in-person students one learning family. I want to personally thank everyone for your patience during this time of transition as we have had to make several changes to how we do business. We use several points of entry and exit into our building, have a busy car rider line, and lots of school construction happening all around us. Together, we are making this a successful re-opening, so thank you for your support and sharing your children with us each and every day.
Allie S. Watkins IV, Ed.D.

WAVERLEY REMINDERS
Attendance: Attendance Counts at Waverley (even virtually) and Every Minute Matters! Our students need to login in every day at their designated times to ensure they are learning and are set up for success! IF your child is out sick please send or bring in a doctor’s note so that our secretary can update your student’s file. Please note our new attendance email account: WAVES.attendance@fcps.org
Communication is important to us so let us know if you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns. Teachers can be reached using the TalkingPoints App, via email, or feel free to call the front office for assistance at (240)-236-3900.
Please know that it is important that we have the most up to date information on file at Waverley. This includes new addresses and phone numbers. Also know that we will work with you to ensure consistent attendance at Waverley for your student. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to Debbie Wivell at (240)-236-3977 or Alex Metral (240)-236-3907. For address or phone number updates, please contact the front office at (240)-236-3900.
Attendance Matters!!
Waverley Staff are so proud of our students and families who continue to work hard to establish school and home routines, and keep students engaged in school. We know it’s not easy and again we are here to help you! You can reach out to Debbie Wivell, Pupil Personnel Worker at 240-236-3977 or Alex Metral, Community Liaison at 240-236-3907 for help.
Our students continue to achieve over 97 % attendance; however, our 4th and 5th Graders are consistently at 99-100% and we are so proud of them!
Help your younger children with school success by getting them started early with consistent attendance. Did you know, that if a student in Kindergarten, misses just 2 days every month it will be harder for them to learn to read and they may fall behind. Find out more in the hand outs below and join us on March 10th at 12:00 for a Parent Chat about the importance of school attendance.
Join the PTA!
Attention: Parents of incoming 6th graders to Monocacy Middle School!!
We are currently accepting registration forms for the 2021-2022 school year! We are very excited to welcome your child to Monocacy Middle School next year. This week, your child’s elementary teacher will share the presentation included below so that they can pick their electives for middle school. Students will use the Google Form, also linked below, to make their selections. During the week of March 1st, registration forms will be mailed home via USPS to parents/guardians. These forms will include your child’s recommended levels for Math and Language Arts as well as the electives they have chosen. Later in March, there will be a virtual presentation about Middle School for parents to attend. More information will follow. If you have questions prior to that, please fill out the Google Form and someone will get back to you promptly.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL TIPS AND TRICKS WITH MRS. MACAULEY & MR. CLANEY
As we welcome our hybrid students back into the building and continue to teach our virtual learners at home, I am sure many families have experienced many different emotions. Our school has taken several measures to make physical safety precautions a top priority, but addressing your child's emotional needs are just as important! Additionally, our virtual learners may also be feeling many emotions as well as they see their peers learn in the classroom. Here are some tips to help your child during this time.
- Talk to your child about their feelings. Are they excited ? Fearful? Anxious? Whatever their feelings may be, it's important to let them know that all feelings are ok! (As we have discussed during PATHS lessons.) Reassure them that it's ok to feel whatever they are feeling in that moment and that feelings will likely change over time.
- As we have learned this past year, it's important to realize that changes can happen. Change can be hard to accept at first, especially when it is unexpected. It's important to reassure your child that change happens and it's ok to feel frustrated or upset at first. However, how you react, as a parent, to the change can be very helpful to how they will likely respond. You are the best role model of how to adapt to change in a positive way.
- Be encouraging! Let them know that things won't stay like this forever and it's important to model a positive attitude.
Want to know a behavior trick?
You can use positive attention to change behavior. In fact, positive attention works better when you want to change behavior! Give praise or rewards for the things you want to see instead of yelling or calling them out on the things you want them to stop. For kids, attention is attention and it doesn't really matter if you are saying, "good job!" or yelling. Kids seek ALL attention from their parents.
Think of it like this - the behavior that gets your attention is also the behavior you will see the most of. You have to ask yourself, "What behavior do I want to see the most in my child?" When you can answer that, you give positive attention and praise when your child is showing that behavior.
If you have ongoing concerns about your child's emotional well being, please feel free to reach out to the school counselor, Mrs. Macauley, kandi.macauley@fcps.org.
If you have ongoing concerns about your child's behavior, you may reach out to Mr. Claney, our Behavior Support Specialist, james.claney@fcps.org
MEDIA MESSAGES
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN ART?
This month in art students have been working on projects that centered around Black History Month. Kindergarten and First grade compared and contrasted two children’s books, The Snowy Day and Windows and recreated their own images inspired by the books. Second and third graders learned about painter Alma Thomas and her abstract art and as well as Kente Cloth which originates from Ghana. Fourth graders learned about Freedom Quilts that may have been used for slaves' safe passage on the Underground Railroad. Fifth Grade studied painter William H. Johnson and his paintings of both farm life in South Carolina and the Harlem Renaissance.
P.E. Particulars
This month in PE Class students K-5 students have participated in Coach’s Conditioning Workouts, The Magic Club (catching and tossing skills), and Juggling 1,2&3 balls. We are also celebrating Black History Month with an inspirational story about courage, strength and perseverance(Hank Aaron Brave In Every Way). Lastly, students have enjoyed finishing each class with our Super Hero Workouts (Thor and Black Panther this month). Who will it be next month?
MUSIC NEWS
In the first part of February, students in all grades finished up our unit about Dynamics and Tempo in Music. The volume and speed of all music can change and that makes it interesting! We had a fun “Opposites Day” in most grades where we imagined music being performed the opposite way of what it normally is. Students told us in our discussion question whether they preferred the normal or opposite way, and why. In the last half of February students are learning some traditional African American songs as well as learning about some interesting Black African American music performers and innovators. Did you know that Chuck Berry is considered the “father of Rock and Roll”? :-)
