Planning to Launch a Snack Cart at Washington Elementary for Fall 2019
Starting in the fall of 2019, we will be serving students a healthy snack each day for a minimal cost (about $0.30 per day!) or $50 per year. In partnership with the PTO, we are happy to be able to provide this convenient and economical option for families this year.
We know that most children do not get enough fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Research has shown that 5 fruits and vegetables a day are the minimum required for good health. At Washington Elementary, we would like to offer your child a healthy snack mid-morning to help encourage the 5 A Day habit! We are able to order fruit, vegetables, and other healthy options in bulk reducing the cost for you.
The cost for this program is $50.00 per child for the entire school year! There will be a few choices each day for students including items such as: baby carrots, sliced apples, oranges, yogurt, string cheese, crackers, pretzels, and more. All of the snacks we provide meet the federal guidelines for smart snacks. Visit www.fns.usda.gov to learn more.
We are hoping for 100% participation in the snack cart program. We feel that this healthy snack will keep all of our students prepared to learn. There will be a registration form available at fall conferences. At that time you will enclose $50.00 per child for the Washington Snack Cart program. Anyone that needs assistance with part or all of the $50.00 snack cart cost per child, can let us know by returning the form with that information checked. Students and families choosing not participating in the snack cart program will find out from their teacher what alternatives they can bring to their classroom for snack.
Barnes and Noble Bookfair.
A Barnes and Noble Bookfair supporting our very own Washington Elementary PTO is taking place on March 2nd, 12-4pm. We can all get together to do some read alouds, reading reading activities, crafts, reader's theater. Goldie will be attending! Please join in the fun and support our school!
Can't attend our bookfair at Barnes & Noble?
Visit BN.COM/bookfairs to support us online from 3/2/19-3/7/19
Or shop in the Mankato Store 3/2-3/7 and mention the book fair to the cashier.
A percentage of the net sale from that week will be contributed to the PTO.
Grades 1, 3, 5 Music Program
Students in grades 1, 3, 5 will present "Styles of American Music" celebrating folk, jazz and blues, lullabies, broadway and show tunes. All students are working hard to learn music that represents many aspects of our American music culture. We invite our Washington families to join us. The program will be Tuesday, February 26 at 9:30 am and 1:00 pm in the Washington gym.
Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade classes will present music “informances” during their regular music class on April 10, 11, 12, 15 or 16. Informances allow parents to see a variety of music skills and activities children learn in weekly music classes. More detailed information with exact days and times will be sent home in March.
Counselor Corner
This month’s counseling lessons were all about emotional regulation. Here at Washington, we use a program called Zones of Regulation. This is a simplified way of talking about our emotions, especially for students who may not have the vocabulary yet to describe their feelings. Zones of Regulation uses four colors to categorize our emotions. See visual below for more information.
The kindergarten students are just being introduced to Zones, so they worked on matching many different emotions to the correct zone. First graders learned that in the green zone we show expected behaviors. They worked in groups to identify pictures as being expected behaviors or unexpected behaviors. They had lots of fun with this! In second grade, students listened to a story about how our body looks and feels when we have different emotions. They made connections between their emotions and body cues. Third graders learned all about different sizes of problems, and how our response or reaction should match the size of the problem. Fourth graders identified their own triggers, those things that happen that push us into a non-green zone. Finally, fifth grade students reviewed each of the zones and worked on perspective taking. Just as Habit 5 tells us to seek first to understand then be understood, we worked on understanding someone else’s perspective before drawing our own conclusions.

New Superintendent Search Process Seeking Your Input
The Mankato Area Public Schools ISD 77 School Board has contracted with School Exec Connect, a superintendent search firm, to assist with the search for a new superintendent. Board members want you to be informed of the process that we will be following as we conduct the search for a new superintendent. Additionally, we hope that you will give your input to assist us in making the best selection possible.
To begin the process, the School Exec Connect consultants will meet with board members, school staff, parents, students and community members individually and in focus groups over the next couple of weeks to determine the challenges, strengths, goals of our district and what characteristics or skills you would like to see in our next superintendent.
You may choose to give your confidential feedback by accessing the Mankato Area Public Schools ISD 77 website at www.isd77.org and completing the online feedback form. All replies will be confidential. Please submit feedback no later than February 26.

You can help raise money for Washington..
It’s easy to support your school with items you already use in your home or receipts from stores you already patronize! Feel free to send any of the following to school with your student.
There are drawers in the hallway next to the lost and found to drop any of them off.
Each box top through Box Tops for Education is worth 10 cents. If each student turned in just 20 box tops during the year the school would receive around $800. Watch for Bonus Tops on participating products or as a coupon from your store purchase. Go to www.boxtops4education.com to sign up, enter sweepstakes and to see a list of the participating products. Box tops do expire so be sure to turn them in on time!
Through Kwik Trip’s Milk Moola program, each milk/juice cap and bag top are worth 5 cents. Please remember to rinse the caps and bag tops before turning them in.
Save your Hy-Vee receipts from both Mankato locations and they will donate $1 for every $150 spent through the Hy-Vee Kash 4 Kids program. The receipts must be dated during the current school year(Sept. 2018- May 2019) to qualify. Every little bit will add-up!
We have set up our PTO as an organization you can support through AmazonSmile. Once you select us as an organization to support, we will receive 0.5% of the price of your eligible smile.amazon.compurchases.
