James was an American author, educator, lawyer, diplomat, songwriter, and civil rights activist. Johnson is best remembered for his leadership within the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People(NAACP) from 1917 to 1930.
James was the son of a headwaiter and the first female black public school teacher in Florida, both of whom had roots in Nassau, Bahamas.
