Visions of Peace 2019
Carleton Middle School art students are excited to be part of the 2019 Visions of Peace exhibit. Many schools from the metro Detroit area will join together to celebrate peace and raise awareness of the United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The exhibit is housed at the Swords into Plowshares Peace Center & Gallery in the heart of Detroit next to Comerica Park. The opening reception will take place from 12-3 PM on February 23, 2019. Admission and on site parking are free. Our Colt artists encourage the WCS community to visit the exhibit that will be on display through March 30, 2019.
The exhibit was founded in 1985 by Lillian Mellon Genser and is sponsored by Wayne State University’s Center for Peace and Conflict Studies. Ms. Wyrybkowski’s 2-D artists communicated their ideas by drawing and painting posters or flags. The 3-D classes built their skills creating paper-mâché masks and lanterns. Each piece of artwork allowed students to express their emotions, personality, and individual Vision of Peace. Many students chose to express their concerns about protecting the environment, quality education, equality, and access to medical care and nutrition.
For more information about the exhibit and show hours, please contact the gallery at (313) 963-7575 or swordsintoplowsharesdetroit.org.

Guest Author Marsha Skrypuch
Our students had the opportunity to hear from guest author Marsha Skrypuch earlier this week as part of an extended learning opportunity arranged by Ms. Hardy. Ms. Skrypuch was able to speak to our students about her struggles in school, learning to read later in life, battling dyslexia, facing countless rejections, and being a professional writer. Our students had the options to purchase two of her books, ask meaningful questions about the writing process, and get a sneak peak at writing for a profession. A short synopsis of two of her books is provided below.
Stolen Girl: Nadia is haunted by World War II. Her memories of the war are messy, coming back to her in pieces and flashes. Sometimes she remembers running, hunger, and isolation. But other times she remembers living with a German family and attending big rallies where she was praised for her light hair and blue eyes. The puzzle pieces don't quite fit together, and Nadia is scared by what might be true. Could she have been raised by Nazis? Were they her real family? What part did she play in the war? What Nadia finally discovers about her own history will shock her. But only when she understands the past can she truly face her future. Inspired by true events.
Making Bombs for Hitler: Lida was kidnapped by the Germans and forced into slave labor as an Ostarbeiter, a foreign slave worker. Lida's small hands make her the perfect candidate to handle delicate ammunition's work, so she is sent to a factory that makes bombs. The grueling work and conditions leave her severely malnourished and emotionally traumatized, but her overriding concern is finding out what happened to her vulnerable younger sister. With rumors of the Allies turning the tide in the war, Lida and her friends conspire to sabotage the bombs to help block the Nazis’ war effort. When her work camp is finally liberated, she is able to begin her search to learn the fate of her beloved sister.
