Falco Newsletter May 3rd - 7th
2021 Newsletter for Five Oaks and Rachel Carson MS
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Falcon Families!
Happy May!
This week is Staff Appreciation Week! Our staff has done incredible work this year to ensure that all of our students have the opportunity to learn in both CDL and hybrid. For instance:
Our nutrition services staff has been working non-stop to ensure everyone has access to no cost, healthy meals.
Our custodial staff is working constantly to make sure students and staff are safe and healthy by sanitizing hourly in addition to all the work they’ve done to prep the building for a return.
Our office staff has made countless phone calls and has been incredibly creative with ideas on how to get information and supplies to students.
Our counseling team has done hundreds of home visits to help students reconnect with school and troubleshoot issues.
Our technology team has made sure that every students has access to a working chromebook and, if needed, a hot spot to connect to the internet.
Our vice principals and student manager have worked with teachers and support staff to deliver supplies and food to students and to ensure that our staff have what they need to be successful.
Our incredible teaching staff has taken on the challenge of learning multiple new platforms, completely modified their teaching styles and routines and has adapted to multiple changes with a passion to ensure that ALL students have access to high quality education in the midst of caring for their own families.
The entire staff of Five Oaks and Rachel Carson worked tirelessly during a global crisis to continue to provide for our students. I am humbled by our entire staff and I hope that you all can take a moment at some point this week to send a note of appreciation to your student’s teachers! We have challenged our students to do the same and will have boxes to drop them in during lunches (we will quarantine the notes for 24-48 hours to ensure safety)!
A note about Cinco de Mayo: Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the success during the Battle of Puebla. Not all Latinx cultures celebrate Cinco de Mayo outside of Puebla, Mexico. We want to ensure that instead of tokenising this event we honor the historical significance by relaying accurate information and trying to clear up misconceptions for instance; it is not Mexican Independence Day (that is September 16). I invite you to do your own research and even ask your student about what they learned in regards to Cinco de Mayo this week!
There’s a lot happening this month, so please make sure to read the flyers and messages below! As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out kelly_cox@beaverton.k12.or.us.

Words From FO/RC Library
How do I see the books in the Library?
Covid may prohibit students from browsing in the library - but that doesn’t mean they can’t see what is available! Check out the following link to our library catalog. Have your student log-in and let the browsing begin! When they find a book they like, press the “HOLD” button and Mrs. Zomerman will find the book and get it to your student. Not quite as good as in person, but close!

Where do I return my Library books???
There are now 2 Library Book Return Bins at school: one in the front office foyer and the other in the back hallway past the fire doors. Students can also give books to any teacher and they will bring the books to Mrs. Zomerman.
Any questions can be directed to andee_zomerman@beaverton.k12.or.us

Per the bylaws we will put all the nominations up for a vote and announce the winners in the next newsletter.
