Gregor Mendel

Founder Of Hybrids

Description

Gregor Mendel was a man who tinkered with genetics and led to hybrids.

Early Years

Gregor Mendel had many successes when he was young. One being he earned top marks in mathematics and science. Also, he was recognized as a gifted child. But Gregor Mendel had some struggles as a child too such as having some hard times in school. Also, Gregor's family was poor.

Experimental Design

Gregor used pea plants and his knowledge to make hybrids. A fact that supports this is that his pea plants lead his discovery of hybrid plants. Also, there is proof that he made hybrids because of his creation of hybrid apples.

Data

1. Mendel used pea plants to study heredity

2. Mendel Discovers hybrid plants

3. Mendel Creates hybrid apples

This data shows that Mendel found out the basics of hybriding.

Reactions

Scientists had very little interest in Mendel's work at first but later they became fascinated his work.

Foundation

By using genetics in ways that eventually caught the interest of other scientists.

EX: “Mendel’s work is the foundation of understanding genetics and the reason Mendel is viewed as the father of genetics."

Vocabulary

Dominant

Definition: A gene that will overpower another gene.

Example: The dominant overpowered many genes.

Recessive

Definition: A gene that gets covered up by a dominant gene.

Example: The recessive got overpowered.

CoDominant

Definition: A gene that is neither Dominant or Recessive.

Example: The codominant hasn't been overpowered but it also doesn't overpower other genes.
