Reading for Pleasure

The world is bombarded by information overload on a minute-by-minute basis and our students need to be able to read, comprehend and use information in creative and constructive ways.

As Pullman, 2004 puts it;

"Consider the nature of what happens when we read a book.... It isn’t like a lecture:

it’s like a conversation. There’s a back-and-forthness about it. The book proposes,

the reader questions, the book responds, the reader considers."

The National Literacy Trust from London conducted a literature review of the benefits of reading for 21st century learners in 2006, the full article is available here.

Pandemic - the co-operative game to rule all games!

A co-operative board game where students each take on a role in a disease-fighting super squad to stop a pandemic (disease outbreak) annihilating the world. Players must work together to keep four deadly diseases at bay by using their special abilities and negotiating actions as a team.

There are two expansion packs as well, which add new levels of challenge such as a bio-terrorist and a lab where you can either create a super virus or a super cure.

Great for teaching strategic thinking, team work and negotiation skills.
