Recipes & Tips

Looking for a recipe or idea from an earlier CSA newsletter?

(Last week's did have some delicious egg tips!)

They all get posted on our website HERE and on our FB page.

Tomatoes

The simple tomato...technically a fruit but treated as a vegetable. Did you know that there are thought to be more than 3,000 varieties of heirloom/heritage tomatoes currently being grown globally, and more than 15,000 known varieties in total?!?!? I thought that was quite impressive!

The first recipe isn't really much of a recipe, more of a tradition. I actually grew up in New Jersey, the good ol' Garden State. I can attest that Jersey tomatoes really are the absolute best, but Ohio tomatoes are pretty darn good too! In New Jersey, summertime meant tomato sandwiches. If you have never had the pleasure of this flavorful meal, you really need to try one today! Feeling a bit fancier? Try the easy grilled tomatoes!

Cucumbers

Cucumber Infused Water

Cucumbers infuse a simple glass of water with refreshing flavor and a dose of vitamins and nutrients. Simply slice the cucumber thinly and add it to a glass or pitcher of icy water. The light and refreshing flavor works well by itself or paired with various fruits and herbs. Try these cucumber water combos:

  • Cucumber water with sliced berries
  • Cucumber water with fresh mint leaves
  • Cucumber water with lemon
  • Cucumber water with cantaloupe chunks
  • Cucumber water with orange slices

Green Beans (& Dill!)

Green beans are such a summer treat served raw on a crudité platter or in a nice, green salad. They also pair very nicely with fresh herbs, like the dill that is in your share this week!

Garlic

So, this week I learned that garlic can be used to make tea. All you have to do is to bring 3 cups of water and 3 cloves of garlic to a boil. Then, turn off the heat, add 1/2 cup honey and 1/2 cup of fresh lemon juice. Strain. Sip 1/2 cup, warm, three times a day. Refrigerate extra to use the next day. Did you know about this? Have any of you tried it? I think I'll stick with English Breakfast myself! For some tasty, savory garlic uses, keep on reading.
