Pratt's Primary Corner
Weekly Update- March 13, 2020
Week at a Glance
- We read about Osawa, a boy in Tanzania who had a cleft lip surgery paid for by an organization called Smile Train.
- We then read about a a 12-year-old girl, Ella, who was born with a cleft lip and runs a lemonade stand every year for Smile Train to help raise money for families who can't afford the surgery.
- We also read about an 8-year-old girl, Neijae, who is the youngest female barber! Through this story were were able to have a deep discussion about character traits she possesses.
Math- This week we've focused on the relationship between multiplication and division. Students have had opportunities to write their own story problems and solve the story problems of others. Multi-step story problems are something we will continue to work on.
Writing- As our opinion writing unit kicked off, we focused on problems we could solve as well as notable people. We began brainstorming notable people we could write about. We defined "notable" as a person who is very important but doesn't get a lot of credit for things they do.
Science/Social Studies- Thursday, engineers came in to discuss Rose Run Park and the thought behind many aspects of the park. This is tied to our Mobility Design Challenge that students will begin working on. Ask your child how Rose Run park increased mobility in our community.
Computer Science- On Thursday students played a simple game and wrote an algorithm for the game using conditional statements (If, Then Statements).
I did not send home a homework menu this week, as you will soon be receiving an update with work for students to complete over our extended break.
Handwriting
Some things we've been working on:
- no letters start at the bottom of the line
- there are spots on the lines where letters should touch
- within words there should be little space between letters
- there should be a finger space between words
This is something that could be easily worked on at home. You could find handwriting pages online (Zaner Bloser)

Tuesday’s Special 3/10/20
By: Anderson Berg
On Tuesday Miss Pratt’s class had art for special with Mrs. McDowell. In art we have been working on a project with elephants for the last three weeks. Two weeks ago, each student cut out a bunch of different color pieces of paper and glued it on their elephant. Last week we cut out the eyes, ears, and tusks with what ever color paper we thought went with our elephant. We also did the outline for our frame and glued our elephant to the background we chose And finally, today we did our frame where we glued a bunch of strips of paper that we thought went well with our elephant and we were allowed to do gems on our eyes, legs, trunk and last but not least the tusk!
Ask your student what color gems they used?
Also you can ask your student what step was their favorite? Next week the topic will be music!
This is kind of what the elephants look like!
