PROGRAMAS REFLEXIONES - YO IMPORTO PORQUE... 2020-2021
~Reflections Art Contest, Distance Learning Style is On!~
Explore the Arts and Express Yourself
National PTA's Reflections program provides opportunities for recognition and access to the arts which boost student confidence and success in the arts and in life.
Each year, over 300,000 students in Pre-K through Grade 12 create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme. This 50+-year-old program helps them explore their own thoughts, feelings, and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life.
The theme for the 2020-2021 program year is I Matter Because... Students submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts.
Due date is October 15th. Please have students email all submissions to Reflections@grantpta.org.
The theme this year is "I Matter Because...". Listed below are 4 items to help get students thinking about the theme and possibly beginning an art project.
Grant PTA Reflections Chair, Mary Beth O'Donovan, is energized and ready for any questions! MB is also dedicated to helping students in the "special artists" category. Parents, please email her if you would like individualized support in getting your child involved in an art project. We're excited to see all of the students' artwork during this unique moment in time.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff, and Community Members,
Please join us for two virtual town hall meetings to discuss our reopening planning, October 21 at 6 p.m. for secondary school focus and October 26 at 6 p.m. for elementary school focus. Zoom links coming soon. Both sessions will be recorded for future viewing.
Thank you to our parents, teachers, and secondary students for taking the recent distance learning district survey, so that we can continue to improve the learning and teaching experience for our students and staff. We had a great response. We will use the information gathered to address areas where we can improve, while continuing to deliver what is working. We will share survey results at our October 15 school board meeting, and post the results on our website www.smmusd.org/School2020-21
Simultaneously, we continue to work toward developing a safe and effective way of bringing students and staff back to campuses, once we are given the authorization by the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) to reopen and once our districtβs protocols are aligned to the countyβs protocols for a safe return.
As discussed in previous meetings, LA County and our school district are adhering to Californiaβs reopening protocols for schools. Within the stateβs reopening criteria, each county is assigned to a tier based on its test positivity and adjusted case rate. At a minimum, counties must remain in a tier for at least three weeks before moving forward. Data is reviewed weekly and tiers are updated on Tuesdays. To move forward into a less restrictive tier, a county must meet that next tierβs criteria for two consecutive weeks. If a countyβs metrics worsen for two consecutive weeks, it will be reassigned to a more restrictive tier. Public health officials are constantly monitoring data and can step in, if necessary. Based on the current data projections, LA County would be eligible to move into a less restrictive tier as early as November, if the countyβs COVID-19 case rate and test positivity rate continues to improve.
In order for us to reopen our schools, we will need to adhere to strict LACDPH safety protocols for our students, staff, and visitors. We continue to work toward establishing the required protocols for a safe and effective return to school. We are in the process of providing for the return of small cohorts of special education and English learner students for services, as our first step, as authorized by LACDPH. I will be recommending that the school board approve January 5, 2021, as the earliest date for the safe return of all of our students and staff, based on our current status in regards to finalizing the implementation and installation of our safety protocols and the transition from distance learning to a form of in-person instruction.
While work is in progress, there is much that still needs to be done between now and January. We recognize that this needs to be a transparent and inclusive process, while steadily working toward an outcome in which students, staff, and parents/guardians feel confident and safe.
After months of analyzing the stateβs expectations, the LACDPH safety protocols, our staffing and fiscal situation, what neighboring districts are doing, and talking to parents and teachers, staff has drafted two options for reopening that address the safety protocols and support the social-emotional needs of our students. Linked is a description of the two models and safety protocols for reopening that we will be discussing with the community in various meetings throughout the month of October and seeking input before the school board makes a final decision at a special board meeting on November 12.
Linked is a list of the various school community engagement opportunities and platforms that will be used to gather input and address questions and concerns, including the two virtual town hall meetings. In the different forums, we will describe what is required of our district in terms of safety protocols and how our district staff plans to address the expectations in our planning. The plans we will discuss are preliminary. We hope to have the community learn about and understand the safety protocols and weigh in on various aspects of the preliminary plan, as we work toward establishing a final plan for reopening to in-person learning as soon as it is safe to do so. Further, parents and staff may submit comments through our Letβs Talk portal, clicking on the school reopening input button. We will have a school reopening survey for parents, teachers, staff, and secondary students following the two town hall meetings to gather your feedback.
We understand that some parents are interested in returning to partial or regular school as quickly as possible. We would prefer to have all students on campus similar to prior to the pandemic, but unfortunately, that is not our current reality. LA County continues to prohibit in-person school, except for small cohorts of special education and English learners, as described above.
Thank you to our parents and staff for your continued support of our students during this challenging time.

web:www.smmusd.org/School2020-21

~OCTOBER IS SUSTAINABILITY MONTH IN SMMUSD~
~ PHYSICAL EDUCATION STATEWIDE REQUIREMENT ~~ REQUISITO ESTATAL DE EDUCACIΓN FΓSICA~
Public schools are required to provide P.E. instruction by the California Department of Education.
At Grant, we are fortunate to be able to provide "live" P.E. instruction two days a week to all of our students in Grades 1-5 from Coaches David, Elmer, and Dylen. Our P.E. lessons provide instruction in developing important skills in bodily spatial awareness, coordination, large and fine motor skills development. One of the benefits of these two live sessions of Physical Education is that it is a break from the core academic instruction blocks and a time to have fun and get the body moving. Additionally, this is an important time for students to get to know their P.E. coaches and know what to expect when we return to school. Consistent attendance provides continuity from Distance Learning into the brick and mortar school setting. As you may be aware, we have already started P.E. classes and attendance is expected as this is part of the regular school day. Currently, SMMUSD does not offer PE waivers or Independent PE at the elementary level.
Thank you for your partnership and patience as we have made the transition to Distance Learning.

Or Richard Marchini: rmarchini@smmusd.org
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is requesting that families submit applications for the free and reduced meal program to ensure continuity and accountability.
The district continues to provide free meals to students through the USDA program.
The USDA has granted SMMUSD a waiver to provide free meals through Dec. 31, 2020, or until available USDA funding runs out making it important for families to have an approved application on file for seamless service once the program ends. The district also requires for reimbursement of the program. This data is also used to help schools qualify for Title 1 funding.
SMMUSD is providing grab-and-go breakfast and lunch Monday - Friday, excluding holidays. Service is from 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. at four schools: Santa Monica High School, McKinley Elementary, Will Rogers Learning Community in Santa Monica, and Webster Elementary in Malibu. Adults wanting to purchase meals may do so for $2.75 for breakfast and $4.75 for lunch.
SMMUSD families may go to any of the four locations, even if not enrolled there. The student does not need to be present. A parent or guardian may pick up meals for students.
If you or your child are sick, do not come to school.
Rogers, McKinley, and Webster pick up will be at the front of the school, either right out front, or in the usual drop off/ pick up drive-through. Samohi pick-up will be at the 7th and Michigan gate.
βDaily meal service for our students is critical for student learning,β Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati said. βWe have provided meals since our school closures in March, through the summer, and continue with this important program this fall, now for all students, free of charge.β
Visit the food and nutrition services website for more information and the application for free and reduced meals. Additional meal and pantry programs are available in Santa Monica and Malibu. Visit: www.smmusd.org/FamilyResources for information.

~HELPFUL TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL STUDENT LEARNING~
- Please ensure your child is in a quiet learning environment. Too often we have been hearing excessive noise when a student unmutes themselves to engage in their class activities and discussions.
- Please provide your child with a set of headphones that has a microphone. Students who are using headphones that do not have a microphone must unplug them to speak. This is distracting to the student and takes valuable time from the class.
- Please ensure your child's learning group is observing distancing and children are wearing masks. We have seen instances where this is not taking place.
- Please speak with the learning group's coordinator or parent-organizer about adhering to the above tips.
- While SMMUSD does not organize or manage these learning groups and what occurs there is out of our locust of control, we all have an interest in making sure Grant students are given the best opportunity at learning during Distance Learning.
Please contact your teacher or Principal Fuhrer if you have any questions or suggestions! We are all in this together!
~ ONLINE SAFETY FOR KIDS and PARENTAL CONTROLS ~
Parents' Ultimate Guide to Parental Controls
Do you need parental controls? What are the options? Do they really work? Here's everything you need to know about the wide array of parental control solutions, from OS settings to monitoring apps to network hardware. By Caroline Knorr 6/8/2020
Topics: Cellphone Parenting, Privacy and Internet Safety, Social Media
Even if you've talked to your kids about screen-time limits and responsible online behavior, it's still really tough to manage what they do when you're not there (and even when you are). Parental controls can support you in your efforts to keep your kids' internet experiences safe, fun, and productive. They work best when used openly and honestly in partnership with your kids -- not as a stealth spying method.
Figuring out what kind of parental control is best is entirely based on your own family's needs. Some families can get by with simple, free browser settings to filter inappropriate content. Some families need help clamping down on screen time. Some folks are cool with spot-checks on their kids' devices. Wherever you are in your search, this guide can help you make sense of the wide array of options for managing your family's devices.
