The Importance of Summer Reading

Most families know that summer reading provides benefits that extend well past the summer months. And yet, nearly half of parents with school- age children are unaware of the "summer slide" (47%), the loss of academic skills that occurs when school is not in session and which is attributed largely to the lack of reading. Researchers estimate that by the time a struggling readers reaches middle school, summer reading loss has accumulated to a two year lag in reading achievement- Scholastic inc.

For every ten minutes you read cross off a popsicle emoji. Have your parents sign and return the brochure to Miss Klinger in September and earn a prize.

The Public Library: Your Summer Reading Headquarters

Did you know that the Milltown Public Library has "Oceans of Possibilities" for you to read over the summer? Sign up for their summer reading program, "Ocean of Possibilities", where you can earn prizes, and participate in events. Looking for a book? The public library can point you in the direction of both digital and print options all for free. Not only do they have books, but access to music and movies too!

Earn a Free Book with Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program

Participation is a fun and easy way for kids to earn free books. They simply read a designated number of books – library books, books borrowed from friends or books bought at Barnes & Noble – write about their favorite part in our Reading Journal, and bring a completed Reading Journal to a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Children then choose their free book from the books listed on the Reading Journal and collect their free book from a store near them during July and August. Click here for the entry form.

Free Capstone Reading-Virtual Summer Camp

Summer is almost here and we are excited to share the 3rd Annual Capstone Virtual Summer Camp Adventure, a very special program for all children and families this summer. Virtual Summer Camp Adventure is a twelve-week learning and reading camp with six bi-weekly themes of places we will GO!


The six camp themes, as shown in the image above, will have a special choice board filled with reading, learning, making, outside adventures, exercise, coding, technology, StickTogether virtual stickerboards and a Weekly Community Connection.


Each choice board will also include 20 FREE Capstone Interactive eBooks per theme. That is 120 FREE eBooks for summer reading, which will be available until September 15, 2022. There will be a variety of formats, fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels and chapter books, for all ages, Preschool to 6th grade.


All children can access the Virtual Summer Camp Adventure at bit.ly/capstonesummercamp22 with no special username and password, and families can visit bit.ly/capstonesummer22 for helpful information on the summer program and how to use choice boards.
