Shout Outs!
Sara Nichols thank you for all you do every day to support students and teachers! This time of year can be exhausting with ensuring students are registered for middle school and continuing to meet with students to support them. You juggle it all so very well!
Congratulations to Salena Williams who recently was promoted to a 12 month position at Great Neck MS. Salena, you were only here for a short amount of time, but we will miss you! Best of luck at GNMS!
A huge shout out to our special education teacher team - Ashley Sawyer, Sharon Yager, Elena Bohn, Frances Zysk, and Anna Shuttleworth! T.R.Y.I.T. Program
The instructional focus is on best practices and strategic integration for students identified with high incidence disabilities. Due to the tremendous success of this initiative, another cohort is planned for the upcoming school year. Depending on the availability of funds, it is anticipated that the new cohort will begin in August.
Teacher assistants and general educators interested in this training opportunity can learn more about the endorsement program by attending one of the meetings at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center, Room 242, Tuesday, April 24, or Thursday, May 10, from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Parking will be permissible in Lot 3. Attendees will be provided specific information about the program requirements, and staff from ODU will be available to answer questions. Additionally, teachers from the current T.R.Y.I.T. cohort will be present to share information about their experiences.
If there any questions regarding this memorandum, please contact Dr. Veleka Gatling, executive director, at 263-2400 or via email at veleka.gatling@vbschools.com.
Professional Learning Program 2018-19
As part of the PLP, the Department of Teaching and Learning has identified and planned essential professional learning based on curricular or program needs. These sessions will vary based on teaching assignment. The attachment lists the essential sessions by teaching assignment. While most sessions are intentionally planned during the summer to provide teachers time to prepare for new or updated curriculum or programs, there are some sessions that occur during the school year.
See attachment for more detailed information on specific courses and timelines.
Mathematics Textbook Adoption Committee
Five members will be selected per grade level. Committee meetings will be held over the summer. Participants will have the option to be paid or receive PLP recertification points for the work they complete. Committee members will review textbook samples and choose two options to be evaluated by all stakeholders. A proposed timeline is attached. Please share this information with teachers and specialists in your building who may be interested in applying.
Completed applications should be submitted to Brittany Williams, administrative office associate, by fax to 263-1424 or email Brittany.williams@vbschools.com, by April 20, 2018. As part of the application process, please note that principals are required to complete and submit a recommendation form.
