The Falcon's Nest
May 2018
Principal's Corner by Jennifer Updike
Another wonderful year at CMES has flown by! We are so proud of all that we have accomplished this year and are excited to bring more positive additions to our elementary next year. For example, our K-3 grade teachers have worked extra hours to create a standards-based report card that will offer clearer communication on your child’s progress in school and assessment consistency across the building. We have also started to incorporate Project Based Learning and plan to increase the opportunities for our students across the building.
Our building was proud to receive the Momentum Award last year for growing kids academically. This is largely in part due to our teachers personalizing learning by using data to drive instruction to align instruction specifically for your child’s academic needs. Due to the extended time it takes to personalize learning our teachers have started to departmentalize. Our 2nd-5th grades have already transitioned to departmentalization and now our first-grade team will be as well. Due to the fact that we have 5 teachers, one teacher will remain self-contained. We are excited to offer personalized learning at CMES and believe we will be able to even better serve our students by having teachers become experts and focused within departments.
We are also working on implementing a Makerspace into our library media center. This transition is happening due to a large grant we received in the fall as well as money raised from the carnival and butter braids. Donations are still needed to offset costs. Do you have any of the following you have laying around you would like to donate?
legos, aquariums, fish food, puzzles, logic games, clay, duct tape, K-nex, art supplies, gardening supplies. Please bring in by the end of May so we know what to order or click on the above button to see what is still needed.

Counselor's Corner
Another year is coming to a close at Clinton-Massie Elementary! We have had a busy year helping students academically and socially. We are wrapping up our spring session of social skills groups and are looking forward to new social skills groups beginning in the 2018/2019 school year. This school year we offered two sessions of the following groups:
1. Zones of Regulation: This group is designed to help students learn tools to regulate their own emotions and improve their interactions with teachers and classmates. Each child will learn about their emotions and how to successfully manage them in social and academic settings through interactive weekly sessions with the school counselor and school social worker.
2. Changing Families: This group focuses on helping students learn resiliency skills to manage stress, anxiety and depression related to loss and the changing family dynamics of divorce, foster care, kinship care, incarceration and death. Students meet weekly with the school counselor and school social worker to explore their feelings and connect with other students who have also experienced life in a changed family.
We look forward to offering additional group opportunities in the new school year and would love to hear from you if you think your child could benefit from participating in a group to meet their social and emotional needs here at school.
Along with offering social/emotional groups to our students this school year, we also offered 3 wonderful programs that benefitted our students and families which included:
1. Falcon Packs: Falcon Pack is a volunteer program right from the heart of the people of the Clinton-Massie community. This program provides 6 nutritious meals each weekend throughout the school year to students in need.
2. Back to School: This program is designed to help students with school supplies and back packs. Back packs filled with supplies will be ready for pick up at Open House. If you are unable to attend Open House the back packs will be given to your child’s teacher on the first day of school.
3. Delights of December: This program was created to help lessen the burden of purchasing gifts during the holidays. Each family signed up will receive gifts for all children in the household.
If your family is interested in any or all of these programs or would like additional information about social/emotional groups please contact the elementary school counselor, Jennifer Horner at (937) 289-2515 or the school social worker, Rachel Sams at (937) 289-1098.
Reminders from the Cafeteria:
If your child has -$5.00 or more on their lunch account, they will not receive their progress report at the end of the year.
Please remember if your child receives free or reduced lunches, they receive free breakfast and reduced breakfast cost 30 cents. We encourage the students to eat breakfast. They receive the main course, up to 1 c. of fruit and milk.
If your student receives free or reduced meals for this school year, that will carry over for the first 30 days of the next school year. If you receive food stamps you will not need to fill out an application at the beginning of the year. You will receive a letter in the mail letting you know your student is free for the school year 2018-2019.
The School Messenger call for student lunch accounts will stop over the summer. They will resume the week before school starts with a balance of $2.75 or less.
Thank you!
New board members will be announced at the next general PTO meeting on May 3rd at 4:00pm.
Reminders from the Front Office:
Progress reports will be held for all school fees owed, overdue library books, any library fines, lunch charges and fees for lost or damaged textbooks. If you are not sure if your fees are paid, contact the front office at 937-289-2515.
