The Generals' Update

Special Summer Message from Mrs. Gambino and Mr. Giarratano

Cohort Assignments

Tomorrow (Friday, August 21, 2020) at approximately 12:00pm, the Genesis Parent Portal will open. Parents/Guardians will need to acknowledge all documents and complete all forms. At that point, student cohort assignments will be visible. Student schedules will not be viewable until September 1, 2020. Due to the complexity of scheduling, we will be unable to accept any requests for cohort changes. Thank you for understanding.

Schedules

The first day of school is September 8, 2020. Even though this day will be virtual for all students, we will expect every Eisenhower student to log into Zoom at 7:40am (individual class logins will be emailed closer to that day) to join their class and meet their first teacher.

The school day will run from 7:40am-11:40am each day. For the first two weeks of school, which are virtual for ALL students, students will be provided a schedule that will ask them to log in to each of their different classes. Teachers will be taking attendance and recording it in Genesis. In addition to introductions to each course and course content, we will also use this time to teach our Generals the new expectations and safety procedures that will allow us to cultivate a safe and nurturing school environment. Some of these would include the procedures for riding the bus, utilizing a one way hallway, visiting the nurse's office, and participating in Live Virtual Learning (LVL). It is very important for students to be familiar with all the expectations prior to entering the building. Additionally, this time allows to reacclimate our students to a rigorous learning environment. Finally, students will be able to see their teachers without masks during this time.

This is the school day schedule all students will follow beginning on September 8. Students' specific schedules will be accessible in Genesis on September 1. All students will follow this schedule every day, whether they are in school or attending virtually.

Beginning Monday, September 21, students who have selected the hybrid schedule will attend school according to their assigned Cohort. Cohort information will be available by Friday, August 21. Students in Cohort A will attend school on Mondays, Tuesdays, and every other Wednesday. Students in Cohort B will attend school on Thursdays, Fridays, and every other Wednesday. Any student who is not in school is still expected to attend their classes virtually according to the schedule above. Attendance will be taken.

***Please note that students will not be changing classes to attend their related arts classes in person. As per the district's reopening plan, middle school students will still only visit 3 locations in the building during their school day: the classrooms for Block 1, Block 2, and Block 3. All related arts classes will be accessed virtually. When they are in the building, students will remain in their core classes and log in to their related arts classes using headphones.

Classroom

Our custodians have been working in tandem with Mrs. Gambino and Mr. Giarratano to ensure that we are meeting the guidelines presented to school districts by the New Jersey Department of Education. Desks have been spaced six feet apart and there is tape on the floor that marks individual student space. Students are required to wear masks at all times and must use their own supplies and materials. Your help and your General's help is crucial to making classrooms function smoothly. Please ensure students are prepared with a charged Chromebook and headphones each day. Teachers are also equipped with portable Plexiglass sneeze guards to interact safely with students during instructional experiences. Please view the video below to see an actual classroom and hear an explanation:

Supplies

Supplies will look different this year, as students will not be permitted to use lockers. Students should carry a backpack and bring a water bottle to class. As noted in the classroom section, a charged Chromebook and headphones are crucial materials for our Live Virtual Learning. We have published a suggested supply list is on our website, but teachers will identify more class-specific supply needs at the start of school. Items on the suggested supply list that are specifically recommended include the aforementioned headphones as well as hand sanitizer and personal tissues.

Synchronous Learning

As noted by our superintendent, Mr. Dickstein, we have moved to a synchronous learning model. Students at home and at school will participate in the same lesson. Teachers will use Zoom to engage students at home, and coordinate group discussions. Lessons will be fluid, asking students to engage in work on and off the Zoom lesson to ensure that students are actively learning, and not engaging in extended periods of lecture. At any given point in a lesson, students will be interacting with their counterparts at home and in the physical classroom; Eisenhower staff will be forging meaningful connections with all of their students. Teachers will return to their traditional grading practices; they will communicate this information to individual classes.

Advisory

We are excited to announce that we will be implementing a new program at Eisenhower this fall called Advisory. Two years in the making, the concept of Advisory is to provide an opportunity for students and staff to foster strong connections in a safe and supportive small group environment. Each student at Eisenhower will be assigned to an Advisory group and a specific advisor. This group will stay together with the same advisor for the duration of their time at Eisenhower. Advisory groups will meet weekly, either virtually or in person, and will address a variety of topics from goal setting, team building, social emotional learning, and meaningful conversations. We are so excited for the opportunity this affords your child(ren) to develop a meaningful connection to a caring Eisenhower staff member.
