Mrs. Waller's BHS Vocal Ens. Class

Class Assignments week of 3/23/2020-3/27/2020

Vocal Warm-Up Exercises

You have a 2 vocal warm-ups:

1. Complete vocal triads of "Do-Mi-Sol-Mi-Do" just like we do in warm-ups in class as high as you can go and back down as low as you can comfortably sing. As you get higher, change the solfege to "Ah" so the sound doesn't get tight. This warm-up should be completed DAILY to minimize vocal loss with range and flexibility. If you are hoarse or sick, rest your voice for 2 days and then try to lightly complete warm-ups.

2. Octave jumps starting in your lower range and going up by half step as high as you can. Remember to slide and make the jumps gooey from starting note and back down.

All concerts, meetings, after school rehearsals, and the Variety Show have been postponed at this time. I will be in touch when new dates/times are available.

Take a Listen, Write a Bit

Listen to the 2 recordings of a very famous aria (song) from the opera, Turnadot (pronounced "turn-a-doe"). The aria is entitled "Nessun Dorma", translation "Let no one sleep":

None shall sleep! None shall sleep!
Not even you, oh Princess,
in your cold bedroom,
watching the stars
that tremble with love, and with hope!

But my secret is hidden within me;
no one will know my name!
No, no! On your mouth,
I will say it when the light shines!

And my kiss will dissolve

the silence that makes you mine!

Vanish, o night!

Fade, you stars!

Fade, you stars!

At dawn, I will win!

I will win! I will win!

This opera, by Puccini (pronounced "poo-chee-nee"), is about a beautiful and brutal princess who challenges her many suitors to answer 3 riddles on pain of death. No one has ever succeeded. Calaf, a brave, selfish prince from a different land, watches the princess slay a suitor and falls instantly in love. Strange guy, right?
