March Edition * Hamilton Elementary School
Every Minute Counts
Why is every minute important? First instruction, with the classroom teacher, is the MOST valuable instruction that a student can receive. It can not be replicated. It can not be made up.
What happens in 15 minutes? Simply put... a lot. In 15 minutes, a classroom teacher and students do the following:
*Receive instruction on a new concept in reading, math, language arts, science and social studies
*Conduct a Science experiment
*Small group instruction
*Reteaching a concept
*Skill practice
*Discussion group
*Project work
*Informal assessment of skills through conferring
The work that is made up during recess, at home and before school is not the same as the first instruction. While the teachers do their very, very best to replicate first instruction, it is a condensed version of the teaching and does not provide for the same level of support as when it was taught the very first time. First instruction is the best intervention that any student can receive.
Illnesses and emergencies happen. These are important reasons for a student to miss school. I would like to respectfully request that absences, late arrival and early leave due to extra curricular activities, family vacations or convenience are kept to a minimum because Every Minute Counts.
Thank you,
Mrs. Conn

LIBRARY NEWS
Thank you to everyone who supported the Barnes and Noble Book Fair! We had a great time seeing our Lion families on such a beautiful day. Special thanks goes out to Emily Sausley and her Bak Pak dog, Sadie, for reading with us and posing for pictures. Ms. Parker and the photogenic 5th grade choir amazed us with their vocal performance. Astounding artwork was on display and we enjoyed all the staff that read stories in the children’s section. Best of all, your purchases will help put new books on our library shelves!
Donations of like-new books are always accepted for classroom libraries. Drop them off at the front desk to the attention of the library.
Congratulations to the 5th grade Name That Book team who will be representing Hamilton at the district competition March 3rd at the Berry Center. Team members are: Syna Sogi, Kylie West, Arie Omirin, Caroline Wei, Celeste Robinson, and Riley Thomas. Abby McGown will join the team as the alternate. Good luck, ladies, and we are so proud of all the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who joined a team and read some fabulous books this year!
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Message to 5th Grade Parents:
Information about LEVEL- I classes for 6th grade: Level-1 classes are designed to challenge students beyond grade-level academic courses and prepare them for success in future advanced coursework. These classes are more rigorous and in-depth content focus than on-level classes. Level-1 classes often move at a faster pace, include different types of assignments, including additional outside reading, and may require more independent study skills.
Students are eligible for LEVEL- I in 6th grade (2015-2016 school year) if during their 5th grade year:
· The student earns a yearly average of 85+ in the on-level class in the same subject level; or
· The student earns Level III-Advanced on the STAAR Reading test to be eligible for the Level-1 Language Arts/Reading and/or Social Studies; or
· The student earns Level III-Advanced on the STAAR Science test to be eligible for Level-1 Science; and
· The student has parent permission to enroll in Level- I
Information about ELECTIVE CHOICES for 6th grade: On Tuesday, February 24, Hamilton Middle School put on their annual Elective Showcase Night. As of Thursday, February 26, I spoke to every 5th grade classroom, and sent home elective sheets on Friday, February 27. These forms are due back to Michelle Erickson by March 6, the Friday before Spring Break. Please make sure to read all of the descriptions carefully. A few important things to note:
· Please rank in order, your order of preference for your electives.
· Your options for electives are Band, Orchestra, Choir, Art, Theatre Arts, or Rotation (with Art, Music, and Theatre Arts; 12 weeks each).
· If your #1 choice is Art or Theatre Arts, your child will be placed in Rotation initially. There is a lottery system of those requesting these 2 courses. You will receive confirmation if you won the lottery or not when the Course Verification Sheet is sent home in May. No samples or portfolios will be accepted.
Core Essentials Word of the Month:
Whether it’s recess, lunch, math class or spring break, we are all looking forward to something. And we just can’t wait! But this month, we are slowing down and learning to do just that—wait. So don’t hesitate to jump on board with us in talking about the Big Idea of… Patience!
We will be in classrooms this month discussing the importance of patience: waiting until later for what you want now!
“Patience is the key to contentment.”
