Safe Firearm Storage
September 25, 2023
Dear Parent or Guardian:
Texas law now requires school districts to distribute information to parents and guardians about the safe storage of firearms. The attached information will help you learn about options for, as well as how to talk to your child and others about, the safe storage of firearms.
In 2021, 4,613 Texans experienced gun-related deaths. The Texas Department of State Health Services (SHS) reports that 55% of Texas firearms deaths in 2020 were suicides and that 59% of all suicides in Texas were by firearms. Suicide attempts involving firearms have a 90% fatality rate. Restricting access to guns is critical in reducing acts of violence, whether as self-harm or towards others. Acts of mass violence and interpersonal violence often end in suicide.
It is unlawful to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be and can obtain access to the firearm. Under Texas Penal Code 46.13, a person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence:
Failed to secure the firearm; or
Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access
The penalty for allowing a child access to a firearm can range from a Class C misdemeanor (punishable by a $500 fine) to a Class A misdemeanor (punishable by a $4000 fine, a year in jail, or a combination of the two).
Texas exempts the purchase of firearm safety equipment from Texas Sales and Use Tax.
Remember, a gun should be stored unloaded in a safe or locked container, with ammunition stored elsewhere. You can learn more and find additional resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety at https://safegunstoragetexas.com.
Safe gun storage is critical to preventing suicide, unintentional shootings, and other tragedies.
Sincerely,
Natalie Bauerkemper

Rude, Bullying, Conflict: What's the Difference?
Plano ISD is committed to providing all students with a safe and nurturing learning environment. If any student currently enrolled in our district does not feel safe and secure at school, we want to know about it. Plano ISD has resources and a communications process in place to assist families in discussing or reporting any concerns, including experiences with bullying, harassment, threats or acts of racism. We can act on these concerns when we know about them and, as a result, better serve our students and families.
Please use the following steps properly report your concerns:
- If a crime has been committed, please contact local law enforcement. (The Plano Police department non-emergency phone number is 972-424-5678). In emergency situations requiring immediate assistance, please call 911.
- Email the student’s teacher, campus principal or counselor immediately. The following details must be provided to expedite the initial investigation and response:
- Campus name
- Name of Plano ISD student (alleged victim)
- Student ID number
- Parent name/contact information
- Names of witnesses
- Names of alleged perpetrators
- Detailed description of alleged event
- Date of alleged event
- Location of alleged event
- Supporting documentation/or other evidence supporting the allegations (if applicable)
- Other information the reporter feels is relevant to the complaint
Please Note: In order to conduct a thorough investigation, it is important that reports include the specific information listed above. Emails received with complete information will receive a response. Plano ISD will fully comply with applicable state and federal laws and regulations as well as Board Policies in response to reports. - Concerns can also be reported using the Plano ISD Tip Line. Wilson "Level Up" Celebration - October 19, 2023
The Wilson 1st 9 Weeks “Level Up” Celebration will be held on Thursday, October 19th from 2:00 pm -3:40 pm. This celebration is designed as a reward for students who meet expectations for academic excellence, attendance and behavior. Campus administration met with each grade level during the week prior to Labor Day and taught them our expectations in each area. These expectations must be met for the timeframe of September 5 through October 6 (end of the 1st nine weeks) in order to attend the celebration.
The criteria students must meet includes:
Grades: Passing each of their classes with an average of 70 or higher
Tardies: 3 or fewer tardies
SATs: 3 or fewer Stop and Think (SATs), which are the same thing as Review 360 Teacher Managed Incidents
Office referrals: No office referrals
We want as many students to participate, so we are hoping that we see our Wilson students with good grades, good behavior, and arrival to classes on time along with being present at school. Students not eligible to attend will remain in class with their teacher to work on a reflection and goal-setting activity that is intended to help them regain eligibility for the 2nd Nine Weeks “Level Up” Celebration.
We really enjoy celebrating our students who are doing such a great job academically and behaviorally.
We also thank our fabulous PTA for partnering with us to recognize these students.
Thank you for your support!
