How to use this document
This document has a series of steps that you and your student will complete to be successful as you start a new year at a new school!
Starting with Step 1, go though all of them one at a time, making sure you have completed each step to ensure success.
Each step will include how-to instructions, approximately how long it will take to complete, and a reason why each is important to complete.
At the end, there will be a link to a survey that you can fill out to select which steps you have completed, and it has a place to leave any questions you may have!

Steps to complete before school starts
Step 1: Setting up your Learning Coach (LC) & Student accounts
- You need your account to access everything.
- As a Learning Coach, you will use your account to check on the student's progress and complete attendance.
- For students, when they log into their account, this is the equivalent of walking through the front doors of the school. *Students MUST use their own login/account when going to class.

*Make sure to set your time zone to Denver (Mountain Standard Time) in your accounts. Here is a link to instructions on how to do so: Setting Time Zone
Remember: Both LC & Student must login everyday, especially on the first day of school.

This Step will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.
Step 2: Understanding the Daily Requirements for Learning Coaches & Students while schooling at UTVA
It is important to understand and commit to the UTVA Daily Expectations, and they are to insure that your student is successful in school. This is a partnership of student, Learning Coach, and school.
Step 3: Learning Coach University (LCU)
Learning Coach University is a collection of short videos designed to help you become comfortable with the online school. This required training provides you with the tools and information needed to support your student(s) here at UTVA and be on the road to an amazing school year. You are an essential part of what makes our school successful! Earn your Learning Coach Expert Certificate today!

This step will take approximately 35 minutes to complete.
Step 4: Required Computer Downloads
Blackboard Launcher
- This is important to have on the school computer, because it is the program that UTVA uses for our online classrooms.

Step 5: UTVA Media Release
UTVA and Media Release Consent:
UTVA is committed to meeting the social and emotional needs of those enrolled at our school. As part of creating a positive school culture we rely on our online media outlets (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, blog, newsletter). This is a way for us to highlight our student’s achievements and inspire and connect with our students. We are committed to maintaining a fun, inspiring and safe online community.
UTVA wants to make sure that parents have a choice in their student’s privacy. We have provided THIS consent form for you to fill out. If you do NOT consent for your student/s image to be used, it is your responsibility as parents, to let your students know to remove themselves from photographs or videos at our events.

Step 6: Check your Materials & Hardware Shipping Schedule
How-To: Click HERE to check the order status.
This step will take less than 5 minutes to complete.
Materials generally ship out from K12 the end of July/beginning of August.
Step 7: Print off/Save the UTVA Academic School Calendar for the 2018-19 SY
This is important because it shows need-to-know dates, such as, holidays, breaks, and the start/end dates of semesters/blocks.
How-To: Download belowThis step will take less than 1 minute to complete.
Step 8: Grades K-9th Complete the i-Ready Diagnostic Assessment
i-Ready is an assessment at the beginning of the year to determine where your student is in their learning. Please have your student complete this before the first day of school.
How-To: You will receive an email with instructions.
This step will take your student approximately 45-90 min. to complete/55-72 questions per subject
*Give 24 hours after receiving your Welcome Letter to start completing this assessment.
Step 9: Orientation
How to: Click on the box, and it will open Blackboard in another window.
This step takes 17 minutes to complete. ***This recording must be watched on a computer that has had Blackboard Collaborate installed.

How to Find Answers to Your Questions: K12 Customer Care
Another way to try fixing the error can be found at help.k12.com. Use the search button and find information on many of the tech issues that can come up.
