Cougar Chronicles

Dear LSE Family,
NOTE FROM DENISE: PTA spiritwear online store closes 9/30, see PTA information below for more information.
Have you ever wondered how we keep our folks safe at LSE? Well . . . many of you have heard me say, "Safety is our number 1 priority!" Here are a few ways that we go about addressing student and staff safety:
* Locked doors - All of our doors that lead to the interior of the building remain locked at all times and are not propped open. Interior doors are locked at all times, as well.
* Visitors to the building - You will notice that when a visitor buzzes at the entry, we ask them to share their name and their purpose for the visit prior to admittance into the school. Visitors check-in with their ID at each visit.
* Materials/Delivery drop offs - You may have noticed a new delivery cart on our front porch. Deliveries and parent drop-offs can be left there and we will be sure to deliver. We have post-its available to label items.
* Safety drills - Our school practices drills monthly. We do this to be proactive and empower our students to feel prepared should we have a fire, tornado, or other event that would put stress on our environment or the safety of our people. Our staff reviews situational and emergency drills and safety protocols on a consistent basis throughout the year.
* Arrival/Dismissal - We post approximately 5 - 10 adults at the entries of our building and each day at arrival and dismissal. Within the building we also have multiple staff assigned to supervisory posts during arrival and dismissal.
* Buses - Students are released from buses by LSE staff members one bus at a time. This allows staff to greet the bus driver and greet each student as they exit the bus. Non staff members are never allowed on school buses.
* Car Riders - Students are greeted by staff members each morning as they exit cars. At dismissal students are placed in cars by a staff member. Car riders being picked up must be picked up by authorized adults only.
* Releasing students - Only adults listed in Powerschool have permission to pick up their student.
* Identification - Our LSR7 staff wear identification badges.
*Trainings - Staff are trained in emergency response as well as active shooter training.
* LSE Emergency Operations team. This LSE staff team is the command unit should the school ever experience a weather or situational crisis. Each member of the team has roles and responsibilities. The Emergency Operations Team meets throughout the year to review protocols and practice scenarios.
Finally, our staff are trained to be observant and be proactive when anything or anyone causes concern. We choose to err on the side of caution for the safety and security of our staff and students.
Thank you for helping us keep our school a safe place for our LSE family!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Tracy Sanders, Principal

Healthy Habits Calendar and Challenge from Coach Carey
Hello! I am the PE Teacher here at Lee's Summit Elementary. I am starting something new with all the students this year and need your help. I am starting a Healthy Habits Activity Calendar that will help students start understanding the importance of being healthy and making better choices when it comes to food. Each week, there will be a different challenge to try and focus on Fitness, Family, Food, and Fun.
The first week they will focus on their Fitness (Sept 5-11) and any challenge they complete on the sheet they will circle and get a point for their class. Week 2 (Sept 12-18) focuses on Family and helping around the house. Week 3 (Sept 19-25) focuses on Food and eating healthy. And the last week, week 4 (Sept 26-30) focuses on Fun, where they can choose from a variety of activities on the sheet that are fun. I will be sure to remind students each week what the focus is on and help them out here in PE.
I have talked with all the students about this and they are to share this calendar with you. Then, they are to make a plan and discuss how they can complete as many of these challenges as possible. This is completely optional, as I have told all the students and they do not have to participate. At the end of the month, the students will need to bring their sheet back in so I can tally up the total number of points each class has. The class with the most points will have their picture taken and posted in the Cougar Chronicles, put up on the TV's by the front, and they get to keep a trophy in their room for that month. I will send home a new calendar at the end of each month so they can make a plan for the upcoming one. If they happen to ever lose it you can find it here in the Cougar Chronicles or have them let me know the next day and I can print one off for them. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me.
Thank you!
Coach Carey
