Coyote News
December 9, 2020 Newsletter
Dear Families,
We understand that many parents/guardians have many questions regarding reporting student absences and other school procedures during COVID. This newsletter contains answers to some of these questions as well as links to helpful state and local websites.
Please follow the steps below to report your child's absence from school. You can also easily submit an absence by using the School App and clicking on the ATTENDANCE button and then filling out the requested information.
All absences MUST be reported to the school nurse by emailing cesabsent@carver.org.
● Please leave your student's first and last name, grade level, and reason for the absence.
● If more information is needed or you do not report an absence, the school nurse will contact you.
● Please make every effort to respond to their communication, as students will not be allowed to return to school unless cleared to do so by the nurse.
● Any student who returns to school following an absence without clearance from the school nurse, will not be allowed to attend class.

Flu Vaccine Reminder
Let’s keep our students healthy! We can start by getting them the current seasonal Influenza vaccine now required in Massachusetts for all students (hybrid and remote) by 12/31/2020. The immunization must be received between July 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. (Click here for more details from mass.gov)
Families should submit documentation to the school health office via fax, email, or hard copy. Thank you!

Mask Care
Please remember that students should wear a clean mask each day. If a student's mask becomes soiled or wet during the school day, they will be provided with a replacement mask and their soiled mask will be sent home with them to be laundered.
How Should We Take Care of Masks and Cloth Face Coverings?
- Wash any worn masks at least once a day, or more often if they look dirty. If the manufacturer gave any special directions, follow them. Use the warmest settings on the washer and dryer that's safe for the material.
- It's OK to put your mask in the washing machine and dryer with your other laundry.
- Don't share masks unless they're washed and dried first.
- Don't store your mask with other people's masks. You can store each mask in its own clean paper bag or hang each one separately on a hook. (for the full article, please go to: https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/mask-care.html)
Hour of Code
December 7-13th is Computer Science Education Week. Students at the Carver Elementary School will celebrate by participating in the Hour of Code. Students from all over the world practice, experience, and play on many free coding programs. The Hour of Code was created by technology companies to help demystify coding.
Students at Carver Elementary School in grades K-5 can access the activities through their Technology Google Classroom with Mrs. Kent or visit Mrs. Kent's Lab webpage. Students will continue their coding experience throughout the year with the Code.org curriculum, Scratch, and Scratch, Jr.
Everyone can try out the activities offered this year. View this link to see our school on a worldwide map. Visit the Hour of Code.
Car Riders Reminder:
Pick up: 2:30-3:00. Remember not to line up any earlier than 2:25. Please be patient with us as this process requires us all to take it slow for the safety of all our students and staff.
Information from Mr. Knief regarding a Remote Day in the event of a Snow Day
The Massachusetts Department of Education (DESE) has approved school districts to use a “remote day” instead of calling a “snow day” if appropriate. A “remote day” would count as a day of school whereas a “snow day” would need to be made up at the end of the school year.
As would be the normal process, the Carver Public Schools will review the local weather forecast for each storm and make a decision if we are going to use a “remote day” or “snow day”. If there is any indication that the storm could potentially lead to power outages in the community we will still call a “snow day”. If not, we will call a “remote day”.
On a called “remote day” for a weather event, the district will follow the half-day Wednesday remote schedule which is attached. We will make every effort to make the decision the evening prior to the storm, but if the situation warrants, we may still make the decision in the morning. The community will be notified via a phone call, Aspen email, and a post on the website. We will also notify the local news agencies.
