I gave a formative, now what?
Argh Matey! NP3 is rocking and rolling with formative assessments. There has been amazing dedication and commitment to the changes necessary for improving both the quantity and quality of formative assessments. Formatives not only keep us informed of the learning that is happening, it also guides the direction of our instruction and the way we address student needs. Check out some of the examples of how your colleagues address student needs after a formative. Nice job NP3!
Coach-Player Reteach
Mrs. Foster used a coach-player activity as a follow up to her formative assessment. She first paired students according to their learning scores, then had students participate in identifying characteristics of a coach and player. Students who acted as the coach were proficient on the expected math skill and used coach-like traits to coach their peer through the steps of a problem. Students who acted as the player were less than proficient on the expected math skill and were responsible for the writing, thinking, and learning of the math skill.
Reflection
Students in Ms. Sakanari's class participated in a peer edit. Students reviewed their peers' writing, with a specific focus on the introductory paragraph. Students made notes on overall strengths and weaknesses, which was followed up with a whole-class reflection. This reflection allowed for deeper learning opportunities and for students to make connections between the take-aways from the activity and revising their introduction.
Defend Your Side
Students in Mrs. Silas' class participated in a reteach activity. Students chose to move on one side of the room or the other, which represented the geographical choice supporting the north or the south. Once they chose their side, they formed small groups to determine reasons why they wanted to live there and how those reasons impacted their decision of where they wanted to live. This activity was a result of a formative, which showed students needed support in making the connection between the choice of where they wanted to live and the reasons they stated.
