Chemistry:8.P.1 Understand the properties of matter and changes that occur when matter interacts in an open and closed container

-Physical and Chemical Properties

Physical properties:Can be observed without changing identity of the substance

Chemical Properties; Cannot be observed with your senses determine how a substance interacts with another substance.

-Physical and Chemical Change

Physical changes: Does not form a new substance

Chemical changes; One or more substance are changed into new substance that have new and different properties. New color may appear bubbles of gas a solid metrial the change diffcult to impossible to change.

-Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures

Made of one atom cannot be seperated into simpilar substance by physical or chemical means.

Are made of two or more different elements that are bonded togethere.Made of elements in a specific ratio that is always the same.Has chemical formula. Can only be sepereter by chemical means, not physically

Combination of two or more pure substances that are held togethere by physical forces, not chemical

-Periodic Table

The periodic table is a table of chemical elements in which the elements are arranged by order of atomic number in such a way that the periodic properties of the elements are made clear

*Groups and Periods

Groups (also known as a family) is a column of elements in the periodic table of the chemical elements

Periods are horizontal rows (across) the periodic table, while groups are vertical columns (down) the table

*Metals, Non-Metals, Metalloids

They are solid with expectation of Mercury they are shinny with good conductor they can be made into wire

The nonmetals are brittle, not malleable or ductile poor conductors of both heat and electricity.

They tend to be economically important because of their unique conductivity properties

-Law of Conservation of Mass

The law of conservation of mass states that cannot be created or destroyed. it can only be transferred from state to state

Vocabulary

*Groups: Columns of elements on the periodic table that share common properties.

*Periods: The periodic table has seven horizontal rows.

*Chemical Properties: Describes matter based on its ability to change into a new or different matter

*Atomic #: It is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus

*Atomic Mass: The mass of atom of a chemical element that is equivalent to the number of proton's and neutrons in an atom

*Physical Properties: Can be look at or measured without changing the matter's density.

Earth History

-Law of Superposition

Younger rock lie above older rocks if the layers have not been disturbed.

-Index Fossils

A fossil that is found in the rock layers of only one geologic age and is used to establish the age of rock layers.

-Ice Cores

A piece of materiel that is found inside of polar ice in Antarctica used to tell the carbon level in other time periods

-Geologic Time Scale

There are for parts to the geologic time scale.

-Precambrian Era: 4.5 billion-570 million years ago, single celled and multi-celled organisms

-Paleozoic Era 570-245 million years ago, sea life the life of first land and plant animals, first amphibians, and first reptiles

-Mesozoic Era 245-70 million years ago, Dinosaurs came and went

-Cenozoic Era 70 million years ago-present day, first human ,Ice age,Modern man evolved, "New Life", climate stabilized 10,000 years ago

-Relative and Absolute Dating

The exact date and time Half-Life/Radioactive Decay

Infectious Diseases

-Microorganisms

A microscopic organism especially a bacteria,virus,fungi

*Virus, Bacteria, Fungi, Parasite

Virus:A small Non-living particle that invades and then reproduces inside a living cell

Bacteria: single-celled organisms that lack a nucleus;prokarotes

Fungi: mall living organism that can give you ring worm

Parasite: small living organism that moves from host to host

-Epidemic vs. Pandemic

Epidemic: Is a virus that has spread in a small community.

Pandemic: Is a virus that has spread in large community.

-Prevention/Treatment

Prevention: keep it from happening

Treatment- treat it and get it out of your system and taken care of

-Biotechnology

The us of living cells, bacteria, etc to make useful products

-Careers

Agricultural science

-Agriculture, Medicine, Economy

* Farmers get more money if they grow their crops with enhanced chemicals to make them bigger than usual. Bio technologist make medicines more enhanced for better treatment.
