A major battle he fought was the Battle of Hastings. Did you know that William was of viking origin? He and other Normans moved from Scandinavian invaders. William spoke no English when he reached the throne and failed to master it despite his efforts. Did you also know that he was very self-conscious about his weight? He was healthy in his earlier years, but he ballooned later in his life. He became so upset with it, he went on a fad diet. All he consumed was wine and spirits for a certain period of time.
Biographical Information
William was a tough, brave, inspirational, and religious person. His real name is Duke William of Normandy, some people know him as William the bastard. He changed it after he conquered England and the Angelo-Saxons. He was born in Falaise in 1028.
Importance
He creates the Doomsday book which helps the king set up an accurate central tax system. He also helped shaped England's feudal system so that the king has supreme power. He was also known for building excellent castles like the Tower of London. His biggest accomplishment, was winning the battle of Hastings. He crossed the English Channel and defeats his enemy, Harold, in 10 months.

Joan of Arc
Biographical Information
Joan of Arc's nickname was The Maid of Orleans and La Pucelle. She was born in the village of Domremy in 1412. She was very brave, smart, highly religious, courageous and determined.
Moments to Remember
Joan of Arc fights in a war called the Battle of Orleans. She was only 15 when she led the French army to victory. At first, people thought she was crazy when she claimed god spoke to her through visions. Eventually, she becomes a catholic saint, and a symbol of French patriotism. During the 100 years war, she helped Charles the VII become king of France! At the age of 19, she was captured by the English and was burned at the stake. They accused her of being a witch because she was wearing pants. Later, they put the case on trial and found her not guilty.
Importance
Joan of Arc was important because took charge in the Hundred Years War and Battle of Orleans. In the Battle of Orleans, Joan had a vision that she leads the French soldiers and that king Charles VII will shortly take the crown. The king and his nobles thought it through and eventually allowed Joan to lead an army of five thousand soldiers against the English at Orleans.
