Here's What's Happening at Milan Elementary School!
MES Annual Canned Food Drive Benefits Milan Food Pantry
This week, November 6th through the 10th, MES is hosting a food drive to benefit our local food pantry. Every month, 75+ local families, including lots of boys and girls, are helped by your donations. Needed items include canned and boxed foods, paper products, and cleaning supplies. You can send your donations to school with your child.
We want to see how many families we can help. Our goal is to collect enough to make sure that every boy and girl in our community has enough to eat so we can all have a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas!
As an added bonus and challenge for our students we have set a goal of collecting 500 items. If we meet our goal, there will be a fun celebration with an all-school dance party!
Grade 4 Presents Our Veterans Day Music Programs - Friday, Nov. 10
Milan Elementary School is proud to honor veterans from all branches of the armed services at a very special music program on the morning of Friday, November 10. There will be two performances, 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
Although veterans and auxiliary organization members are all welcome to attend either or both performances, the Milan American Legion will be actively participating in the 8:30 a.m. show. All attending veterans will be recognized during both programs that will feature patriotic songs and music performed by our fourth grade students.
Fourth Grade parents please note that this will be your child's public music performance for the year. You are also invited to attend either performance.
Book Fair is Coming! Monday, November 13!!
There promises to be something for everyone! And, our awesome PTO will give each student $2 toward the purchase of one book on Monday evening.
This is a great time to stock up for something to read on these long winter nights! Don't miss out on the chance for some great books!
Don't Miss MES FAMILY DAY at the RESERVATION, Wednesday, November 15
Moving MES Forward Foundation is hosting once again this very popular fun filled evening for our MES School family at the Reservation Restaurant here in Milan! Come support your school and enjoy a delicious dinner, fun activities, and visiting with your teachers and staff members as they help waitress and clear tables.
A big THANKS to Greg and Jeff Holt for donating 10% of the day’s proceeds to Milan Elementary! You won’t want to miss it!
MES and MIS Students Learn About Being Good Citizens
Milan Elementary and Milan Intermediate School sold Character Counts basketballs to raise money as a “Pay It Forward” project as part of the Character Counts program. School Counselor, Brenda Schwering organized a 4th grade Citizenship Club who helped in selecting who received the funds raised from this project. After brainstorming and discussing many organizations, it was time for the club to vote. Congratulations Heart House and YES Home! A BIG THANKS for the financial support from the Moving MES Forward Foundation and UCB of Milan who paid for the purchase of the balls so that all the money raised could be given back to these organizations who are making a difference in the community.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO BE KIND!
Gavin Morgan and Callie Clark were Gold LEAD Card winners for the first quarter of this school year. Our school employees submit names of students who they notice doing good deeds. At the end of the grading period, two names were drawn to receive Subway Gift Cards.
Congratulations to these students for being the lucky winners. We commend them for their outstanding acts of kindness!
MES is Grateful for Legion Post 235's Support
Support and compassion is what you find in a small town like Milan. This community has many organizations and businesses that help MCSC. Milan Elementary School is appreciative of Legion Post 235 for the monetary donation which will benefit students and the school. “We can make a difference as we work together to build a strong community; we appreciate Legion Post 235 for their generosity,” states Schwering, school counselor.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, There's a Leader in Us All
This school year has gotten off to a great start as Milan Elementary is undergoing a whole school transformation process called “The Leader in Me.” This process teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. Students are being taught to bring out the leader within themselves as they learn Stephen Covey's 7 Habits.
Ask your child about their classroom mission statement or about which habits they have learned so far.
Mrs. Clark’s Third Grade Class Wins First Box Top Collection Contest!
Mrs. Clark's third graders won the first round of the PTO-sponsored box top contest. They chose food from McDonalds as their afternoon snack treat and it was delivered to them last week.
A whopping total of 4470 labels were collected with the help of all students and, at 10¢ per label, raised $447 to be used for our school! A special thanks goes out to Mrs. Block and her third graders for gathering and tallying the sheets! What a great service done for our school!
Collection sheets for the next contest, which will end January 5th, were sent home with everyone and extra sheets are available in the office. Which class will win the next round? Will it be your child's? You can help by watching for those Box Tops for Education labels as you do your holiday food shopping.
