Career Readiness
Here at Auburn, we strive to prepare our students for a successful transition to the workforce. One of the best ways for a student to step into the working world and be successful beyond their degree training involves also practicing Career Readiness skills.
What is Career Readiness?
The National Association of Colleges and Employers defines Career Readiness as “the attainment and demonstration of requisite competencies that broadly prepare college graduates for a successful transition into the workplace” (National Association of Colleges and Employers, 2016). In other words, there are 8 skills that a college graduate should be able to demonstrate, no matter the industry or field, that are proven valuable for career readiness and success.
What are the 8 Career Readiness Skills?
Leadership. Accessing and managing emotion of all individuals, capitalizing on the strengths of others, and using interpersonal skills to motivate, guide, organize, prioritize and delegate work.
Technology. Leveraging appropriate technologies ethically and efficiently to solve problems, complete tasks and accomplish goals.
Teamwork. Building relationships with a diverse network in order to archive a common goal by negotiating and managing conflict.
Communication. Delivering and receiving information by articulating and discerning thoughts and ideas by using oral, written and non-verbal communication skills.
Professionalism. Demonstrating accountability by taking ownership of your actions and behavior while keeping the interests of others in mind, and being willing to learn from mistakes.
Career Ownership. Navigating and exploring career options, taking the necessary steps to pursue opportunities, and understanding how to advocate for oneself.
Cross-Cultural Fluency. Demonstrating a respectful attitude by being open, inclusive, and sensitive to viewpoints of all people and being willing to understand individual differences.
Critical Thinking. Exercising sound reasoning to analyze issues, make decisions and overcome problems.
How Can You Develop These Career Readiness Skills While at Auburn?
Leadership. Seek a lead role in a student organization, group, or team and delegate relevant tasks to team members that result in a successful project completion.
Technology. Create profiles on appropriate social media platforms; evaluate sources of information and potential impact before posting or sharing.
Teamwork. Collaborate with group members for a class project and identify group member’s strengths.
Communication. Engage in everyday conversation, express ideas, make presentations, recruit members an comprehend feedback in student organizations.
Professionalism. Taking initiative in meeting, being prompt, and contributing in a construct manner in a student employment role.
Career Ownership. Explore career options through internships that relate to your personal skills and goals to gain experience and knowledge for the future.
Cross-Cultural Fluency. Take advantage of study abroad opportunities. Appreciate, values, and learn form other cultures and perspectives.
Critical Thinking. Critically analyze the audience and evaluate appropriate work samples for you eportfolio. Connect class projects to the career readiness skills.
As you can see, these 8 Career Readiness Skills are applicable to any student in any are of study. No matter your major and no matter your post-graduation plan, Career Readiness Skills are an invaluable part of your career development and marketability. Seek out opportunities to further develop these skills to ensure that upon graduation, you are ready for your next step. Marissa Miller
Meet our newest career counselor! Marissa started in the Auburn University Career Center in June 2018 but has been a part of our team all along. You may recognize her face as the career counselor within the Exploratory Advising Center, a role that really shaped the professional that she is today. Marissa is an Auburn graduate and received her Master of Education in Administration of Higher Education degree in 2014. She stayed in the Southeastern Conference for her schooling and also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management from the University of Florida. Marissa loves her role in the AUCC and enjoys meeting with students one-on-one and helping them explore all of their options to make a lasting connection to their future career paths. She enjoys spending time with her husband, Joe and beautiful baby boy, Luke Everett!
