Fulton Science Academy
ACCREDITED AND STEM CERTIFIED COLLEGE PREP GIFTED SCHOOL
THE WEEK AHEAD | September 14 - September 18, 2020
Principal's Corner
Dear FSA Students and Parents,
I want to begin this newsletter in remembrance of September 11, 2001. It is a day that we will never forget. We remember the innocent victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks and we honor our first responders' bravery. We know that we can not bring back that day and change what happened, but we can make a difference by spending a life building peace for everyone. I consider our community as peace builders and I thank each and every one of you for that.
I hope that everyone had a great week! It was wonderful to welcome more of our students on campus this past week as we continue our phasing in plans! Next week we will begin welcoming our 6th and 7th grade students who opted in for on campus learning.
The timeline for the addition of remaining grades to the hybrid program remains as follows:
- Monday, September 14 - 6th & 7th grade students will join the hybrid learning program
- The week of Monday, September 21 is Fall Break Holiday
- Monday, September 28 - All remaining grades will join the hybrid learning program
This gradual timeline will allow us to ensure that we are introducing each new grade level as safely as possible. Smaller groups joining at one time will allow us to train several grades at a time with operational COVID-19 procedures at the school before the next group of students arrive at the campus.
A Message From Mrs. Griffis - Assistant Principal of Student Services
ACTION NEEDED BY SUNDAY SEPT. 13th!!
Dear FSA Students,
As we approach the midpoint of this first nine weeks, I wanted to take the opportunity to THANK each of you for your hard work and perseverance. I am beyond proud of you and am hearing so many wonderful compliments from your teachers. We know the changes we have made are new and can be challenging, but just like our incredible FSA teachers, you are giving it your all and meeting the challenge head on! We are currently working on our school spirit t-shirt for this year, and would like to order one for YOU to celebrate your hard work. Please complete the questionnaire below to let me know your size by this Sunday, 9/13 (parents, please complete one form for each of your children). We are in the design phase, but I will be back in touch once the shirts are ready! You all know we are here if you need us! Carry on and continue giving your all - as a team, we will get through this and be even better than before!
Special thanks to our wonderful MSO team for their support of this project! We appreciate ALL you do for our FSA family!

MAP TESTING BEGINS NEXT WEEK
NWEA has worked to provide schools with the tools needed to administer remote testing for virtual students, so students both on campus and online will take their assessment in real-time together. This will be our first time with remote testing a large group, so we will work to troubleshoot and adjust if and when adjustments are needed once we begin the process. This MAP assessment is a wonderful tool to identify strengths and areas for improvement for our students. It provides us with a great overview of potential areas to work on this school year, allowing us to use the data as a tool to help meet the needs of each of our students. That being said, we do not want this to be an additional stressor for our students OR families. We have waited a bit later than usual to administer, so that our students can feel more comfortable with the virtual learning environment.
Families should have received emails with detailed information about testing. If you have not received communication regarding MAP testing starting next week, please contact your grade level administrator.

Tips for MAP Testing
Here are a few tips to help testing run smoothly:
Make sure students are well-rested and eat a healthy breakfast. Students severely underperform when they are tired, hungry, or generally unwell. Try to avoid sugary foods on the mornings you have testing and opt for protein and fiber-rich foods instead. Also, make sure students are going to bed early enough to get a full night's rest.
Be ON TIME for school whether you are an on campus learner or a virtual learner.
Do NOT emphasize or stress the MAP test at home. The MAP test is an adaptive diagnostic test, meaning its purpose is to give teachers data and information about where a student's strengths and learning areas are mostly focused, and where we can focus instruction to best help them this year. Students who are stressed out about the test are MORE likely to underperform than students who take the test in stride.
Please remind students that they are NOT allowed to discuss test scores. They should not be sharing, comparing, or otherwise discussing their scores with ANYONE on campus, and doing so will result in disciplinary action.
If testing from home, help your student find a quiet space to complete their testing sessions. We kindly ask that once students are set up, parents do not remain in the room with the students while completing their test.
More Information on Upcoming Elementary Monthly Resource Pickup Plan
We will have monthly resource pick up days for our elementary virtual learners to have the necessary materials needed for learning from home.
Our next date will be on Saturday, September 12th. This pick up will be run similarly to the August pick up date. You should have received a designated time slot, based on last name, to come and gather the next necessary materials. We will have the upper carpool loop set up again for quick and easy pick up! If you did not receive this email, please reach out to Mrs. Sanchez (csanchez@fultonscienceacademy.org)
The date in October will serve as a special day for our virtual learners. Saturday, October 10-Sunday, October, 11th will be the third resource pick up dates. Please mark your calendars and be on the lookout for more information about these resource dates in the coming weeks.
LET’S SUPPORT THE BAHAMAS!! Help Us Help Them!

Join us for our very first VIRTUAL elementary Grandparents Day!!!
On Sunday, October 4th our FSA elementary students have the option to join us virtually to celebrate Grandparents day. While we cannot have our typical celebration where we gather together at school, we are excited to continue the tradition of this special day. We will host a Zoom session where grandparents from all over can join us for a virtual celebration. This unique school year and digital world allows us to connect with these loved ones, even if they aren't nearby!
This event is optional, but we look forward to this special afternoon with any elementary families that would like to join! The Zoom session will take place at 2:00pm on Sunday, October 2nd. During this time, we will present a small program and have an opportunity to *meet* via Zoom.
Elementary Students.... Do you have a special grandparent you would like to honor on this day? We are asking for your help! We would love for our students to be part of this program. If you would like to prepare something in honor of your loved one to share during the program, please do! If you create something special that you would like to share please email it ahenderson@fultonscienceacademy.org so it can be included in our program. We look forward to seeing what you might choose to put together for your grandparents.
Will you be attending? Please RSVP using THIS FORM, so that we know who to send the Zoom link to prior to the event date.
