Socrates was a philosopher back in Ancient Greece. Socrates wanted to stop the backwards minds in Athens that rely on the past. He started social rebellion among the youth to change their thinking.
The Teacher

Socrates on trial for his views on the government. His views were looked down upon by majority of the people.

Socrates was sentenced to death by the Athenians for his teachings. He died from consuming hemlock poision

Connection to Henry David Thoreau
When Socrates's home of Athens lost a war to Sparta, he began questioning the leadership of the state. Athens became an unorganized nation that had failed it's people. Thoreau writes "All men recognize the right of revolution; that is, the right to... resist government when its...inefficiency is great...". Socrates chose to oppose the Athenian control because spotted said "inefficiency".
