Mrs. Graham’s Classroom Update
The year is staring off very well in 2nd & 3rd grade! We had an exciting first day with the solar eclipse. All of the students were able to watch the process safely and enjoyed every single second! We moved into more of our reading and math curriculum and jumped into writing with a few fun exercises. We are getting to know each other and getting back into the groove of the school day. I will start sending out homework on September 5, 2017, which my students have all been begging for! I know it has only been a couple weeks, but I am so thankful to be teaching your students. I just know we’re going to have a great year!
Mrs. Kangas-Hanes 4th/5th
The Great North American Eclipse made for a phenomenal start of the new school year. This once in 350 year event (the sun and moon will not shadow this path again for 350 years) gave our school an opportunity to begin our year in serious scientific discovery.
We began our first day by watching videos and reading academic articles about how and why the moon’s path causes eclipses. Then armed with protective eyewear, our science journals, and a great deal of questions and enthusiasm the 4th and 5th graders watched and documented as the moon occluded the sun to the peak 97% covering.
What did we learn? We documented this experience using the formal scientific method, a new way of thinking for the 4th graders and proving to be an authentic real-life science experiment for the fifth graders.
Here are some of the observations made by the students…
“It got dark and cold, the birds stopped chirping and the grasshoppers started to chirp, the sun looked like a cookie with a bite out of it. During the eclipse I felt nervous, it felt cold…the moon [Sun] looked amazing because it was turning a different size…I liked the solar eclipse, it was fun…the weather turned crazy….the moon looked orange…it was fun to draw the time the moon was hiding the sun…under the trees I observed the eclipse through shadows…I felt impressed when the eclipse ended, I wanted the shadow to stay…”
After experiencing the eclipse students had these questions:
“ Why are the stars round from the Earth?” “How do shooting stars fly?” “How do the scientists predict the time and date of ecliples? When is the next eclipse? Can we go?”
The next Solar Eclipse will be in 7 years and the Path of Totality will cross Carbondale, Illinois. Our class is hoping we can go together and witness this phenomenon once more, for we found it exciting and inspiring! Perhaps this would be a great class trip from Rimrock! Looking forward to 2024!
Mrs. Pearson Art
The students in 2/3 used oil pastels to create eclipse pictures and are now working on their mixed media solar system artwork.
The 4/5 graders are learning how using a grid can help them reproduce a line drawing with better proportion and accuracy. They will use this skill later in the year when they start their Idaho map project.
