Principal's Update
What a great week to be a Hornet! To kick off March, we celebrated Read Across America Week! Teachers held activities in their classrooms and had guest speakers throughout the week. Check out the pictures below! This weekend our boy's basketball teams head to Lead for the annual Cartwright Tournament. They have had a great season and we wish them luck this weekend!
Next week we kick off the Kids Heart Challenge. You will have information coming home regarding the fundraising opportunity for the American Heart Association. We will celebrate being heart-healthy with different activities and challenges through the end of the month. We also have our Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences. Parents with junior kindergarten through 5th-grade students should receive a message from their child's teacher regarding a scheduled conference or a phone conference. Middle school conferences will be open house style. Next Monday also marks the beginning of the track season for students in 6th-8th grade. There will be an informational meeting for parents on Tuesday at 5 PM.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Counselor's Corner
The week flew by and ended with delightful sunshine.
This week in counseling lessons careers remained the focus. Junior Kindergarten talked about different careers and made their own booklet exploring careers people can have in fields that involve helping people and animals, making something, working outside, working in a store, and driving a truck. It was great to see their imagination at work. 2nd Grade completed a lesson that focused on our differences and how we are all different and therefore may have interests in a variety of careers. Currently, however, many 2nd graders want to be veterinarians and a couple of students melted my heart with their desires to be school counselors. 3rd Grade started their problem-solving unit with Second Step. They learned the steps to problem solving: Say the problem, Think of solutions, Explore the outcomes, and Pick a solution. 5th Grade was very excited to start their South Dakota My Life Lessons and started their first "mission." This mission had students learn more about three careers they are interested in and explore how what they are learning about in school relates to different careers. They are very excited to continue learning more about careers, their interests, and how everything relates.
In Middle School, 6th Grade continued with their South Dakota My Life Lessons. Their lesson was similar to 5th grade, in relating school subjects and interests to different careers. Half of 8th Grade researched three careers they are interested in. They looked into pay, work environment, training/schooling, what they like about the career, and what some challenges may be. This worksheet is the beginning of a larger project where 8th graders will present a career to their class.
Enjoy the weekend!
