Hilltop Herald - Parent Edition
Be Respectful ~ Be Responsible ~ Be Resilient
Volume 1 ~ Issue 21 ~ January 23, 2023
Amazing Falcon Families,
This is the Great Kindness Challenge Week!
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – Dr Seuss
HTM's mantra states: Be Respectful ~ Be Responsible ~ Be Resilient. As I ponder on these phrases and the order in which they are said, showing kindness falls in the category of being respectful. Additionally, as human beings, one of our responsibility is to show kindness even if it is not deserved. Finally, to show kindness consistently demonstrates resiliency of the individual. In essence, being kind embodies our HTM mantra.. One would think that the idea of being kind is a no brainer, but because we are all different, being kind comes natural to some while for others, being kind requires more thought and effort. However, it does not matter how we arrive at kindness, as long as our behaviors reflect the good in all of us.
The power of kindness is underestimated. It is highly contagious and makes people feel good. Nobel Laureate, Albert Schweitzer said this, "Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun melts the ice, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate.'
As we begin this week, I hope that each of you will watch the video in the section on the Great Kindness Challenge and participate either individually or as a family to perform one act of kindness daily. Click HERE to access the list of acts of kindness that you can do this week at school and at home. This year's theme is Grow Kindness. Let's do just that in our HTM community!

Future STEAM Opportunities for our Lady Falcons
Lady Falcons, do you love science? Do you want to pursue a career in science. Or are you just curious about how things work? If so, there are two opportunities in the next few months in which you can participate. Be Wise is a program for girls who applied and accepted into the program where they will participate in STEAM activities. Expanding Your Horizons is an annual conference that takes place at the University of San Diego. It is a free event but it requires you to register to attend. Both have deadlines. If you are interested, please don't forget to submit your application for Be Wise and register for EYH.
Parents, if you are scientist or work in the STEAM field, this is also an opportunity for you to volunteer or be a mentor. Click HERE to sign up.
Finally, the rest of the newsletter contains reminders of our cell phone policy, dress code policy and bullying/harrassment policy. Please read it again especially with your parents so that there are no surprises.
Falcons, let's have an amazing week.
Congratulations to all our participating staff. Thank you Ms. Cruz for organizing a team.
It's time for the 12th annual Great Kindness Challenge! This year's theme is Grow Kindness. More than 19 million students in 37,000 schools in all 50 states and 115 countries will joyfully plant seeds of kindness and watch them grow.
Falcons, I cannot wait to watch you spell on Wednesday. May the best student win.
Falcon Families, if you have an incoming 7th grader, please join us for this first of many informational meetings.
Lady Falcons, if you want to be a science major in college or pursue a science career, this application to participate in the Be Wise Program might be just the right fit for you.
Lady Falcons, this is a great conference to attend if your intested in pursuing science.
As we start Semester 2, this is a reminding that all students are required to follow our cell phone policy at HTM.
It is our collective expectation that everyone on campus will uphold the cell phone use policy as outlined in the district's board policy as well as in our handbook:
- Upon entry, all cell phones must be turned off and placed in the backpack.
- If your a staff member directs you to put it away, please listen and put it in your backpack.
- Cell phones are not allowed in the bathroom. If you are caught with it in the bathroom, your phone will be taken immediately and must be picked up by the parents. NO EXCEPTIONS.
- If a staff member takes a cell phone away, they will give it back to you at the end of each period UNLESS it warrants being taken to the main office.
Families, please read the image below to know the expectation of dress code for all students.

As we begin the new semester, it is important that we remind you of our Bullying/Harrassment Policy. Please review as a family.
