Lander Loves Humble
An update on our partnership with Humble Elementary School
Dear Lander Families,
We want to thank all of you for the generous donations to the Walk-a-Thon. We made over $8,000. This money is used for our Lander students’ t-shirts, parties, Pride Paw winners, classroom grants, drug awareness activities and many other things our PTG provides for our students and staff.
This year, in addition to these wonderful activities from PTG, we are making a difference! We will be taking $3,000 from this fundraiser, plus almost $650 of donations collected at Lunch with a Loved One, and we will be using it to provide for Humble Elementary School in Humble, Texas. This school was hit hard by Hurricane Harvey. Due to the devastation of the school neighborhood, whole families who have attended Humble since Pre-K had to move because their houses were destroyed. Some families have lost everything, but still attend Humble. Many new families from other parts of Houston have come to Humble because their houses were destroyed and they were left with nothing.
Most of their community was under water...
In the picture to the right, Humble Elementary is right above the “b” in Deerbrook. As you can see, many roads were completely underwater.
The clean up efforts have taken weeks...
In another picture, you can see the contents of the homes right across from the school parking lot. The entire street looked like this, but the cleanup process is underway! Clean up trucks come daily to the neighborhood. Police have been guarding the neighborhood around the school for weeks and that finally came to an end last week.
Teaching students about kindness...
We cannot imagine the impact of this disaster on these children and their families. We are so fortunate at Lander and we wanted to spread our good fortune to the students at Humble so we are planning some little acts of kindness for our students to do for their students. Our teachers are partnering with their teachers - similar to “pen pals”, but by doing acts of kindness. We want to lift their spirits and let them know “Lander Loves Humble”!
We wanted to spread kindness throughout the year so the children can actually see it and contribute on their level. The more tangible it is for our children, the better.
Below are some of the activities we have planned for the school year. After these and a few other activities are purchased, we will be sending the remaining donation to their Principal to help them buy new school supplies, books or whatever they feel the children need to have a great school year! We are trying to arrange to have our students Skype their students so we can present them with a “big cardboard check”!
Kindness Projects
September – our staff sent donuts to the staff at Humble Elementary School to brighten up their day.
October – We have purchased Halloween bags with a special message on the outside that says “Lander Loves Humble” and each bag has safety tips for trick or treating. On the inside, there will be a personal, handwritten message from each of our students to each of theirs.
November – “All About Me” – Our students are making “All About Me” posters and will send them to their partners along with blank “All About Me” posters for their partnering classrooms to fill out and send back to us so we can get to know each other.
December – Our students will be sending their students a new book for the holidays for them to take home.
January – Our students are going to do some type of snow activity to share. Many of their students have never even seen snow! We want to share a little bit of Ohio with them.
February – We will share Valentines with their students.
March – We will be sending pencils that say, “Lander Loves Humble”.
For the last two months, we are planning similar activities, but the planning stage for those has just begun.
Once again, we would like to thank you for always being so generous and working hard by donating money to our school. Now we have the opportunity to share our kindness.
