Quote of the Week

"The biggest mistake is believing there is one right way to listen, to talk, to have a conversation." ~ Deborah Tannen

Tech Tips

Thank You….Technology

by Danielle Stilts

Thank you….book trailers for allowing kids to think deeply about their book while being innovative at the same time. Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese aren’t going to know what hit them.

Book trailers are very similar to movie trailers. Students have the opportunity to digitally advertise their book to potential readers without giving away too much of the plot. This pushes students to consider the elements of the story in ways beyond the typical reading notebook entry. On the flip side, this allows for student-driven promotion of reading within and beyond our school walls.

http://library.conroeisd.net/book_trailers This website can help us get started with book trailers in the classroom. There are examples, as well as lists of web resources for audio and pictures.

Read, Write, Think Book Trailer Lesson Plan This lesson plan is also a great resource.

Students can start with watching a few examples. Next we used a storyboard to make a plan and select text. Students then search or take their own pictures/video. For putting the trailer together, we have had success with Windows Movie Maker on N-Computing. Photostory works to make a simpler version, video just can’t be inserted. Little Bird Tales, WeVideo, Animoto (for Education), and PhotoPeach are all web-based tools that will be great options when we move to mainly Chromebooks. Students can share their finished trailers with other prospective readers at Highcroft or even beyond using tools like YouTube. Let me know if there is any way I could help or explore more with you!
