A Peek Inside Our Week
Dot Day is this Saturday- we celebrated by Making our Mark!
Reader's Workshop
-mini lesson whole group learning a certain skill or new teaching point
-private reading
-partner reading
I have LOVED watching these kids shock themselves when they realize they are able to read these stories ALL BY THEMSELVES without me reading the words to them. We started Old Favorite books this week. Stories like Gingerbread Man, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Are You My Mother? ... these stories kids have heard before. They can open these stories, remember them from reading them before and retell the story by looking at the pictures.
This is real reading guys. Your kids are READING!!! ..... and don't worry, of course reading the words will come later. Encourage your children at home to keep this hard work up!!! We want to instill the LOVE of reading at home and at school, and this is just the beginning! :)
(See video below of a student doing a remarkable job reading and his partners smiling with pride!)
What Are We Learning?
Adding in Old Favorite Books-- fiction books we've heard told a zillion times. We can READ stories we've heard before!! We can look at the pictures, remember the story, and retell it !! We know our words have to match the picture and we read like a teacher not a robot.
Phonics- ABC Bootcamp- Learning T, U, V, W, X,
Writing- Write about what you know, and add more! Stretchhhh your words out slowly to hear the beginning sound. Write the sound you hear! When you're done, you've just begun!
Math- Composing and Decomposing up to 5 -- and review of One More One Less
Science- Physical Properties of Solids
Social Studies-
We are patiently waiting on our Kindergarten ipads-- crossing our fingers we will get them by the end of the month. Teachers are planning some great activities and lessons and can't wait to get started!!
Officer Tee came to visit Kindergarten and talk about his job to protect the community! The kids had the best time and now know exactly what to say to help their parents get out of a speeding ticket -- haha!!
Ice Cream at Lunch
SO, I just wanted to let you guys know that it's an option for your kiddo. We encourage eating our healthy food first, and then the ice cream- so no worries there. I just ask that you discuss with your child in the morning if they are allowed to buy ice cream. In the lunch account, you're even allowed to put in a note about what days your child is allowed (ex: Maybe only Tuesdays and Thursdays you let your child get it, or whatever works best for you.)
Please chat with your child about if they are allowed/not allowed to go and get ice cream from the line- this will help us in the lunchroom each day. Thank you!!
Family Friday Lunch-- NEW CHANGES THIS YEAR!!!
Heart Maps!
Please work with your child on making these Heart Maps to help them in Writer's Workshop!! They will bring the blank maps home on Tuesday and you can return as soon as they are finished.
**Writing people's names can really help! Instead of writing "brother", write brother's name next to the illustration.
If you're stuck-- please Google Heart Maps for lots of ideas and pictures to help you!!
