Hello STEM Families and welcome to this week's newsletter. Featured this week are Updates for Families of Seniors. Important information about CUSD Summer Programming is included as well. Finally, schools were closed early today out of caution due to the approaching storms. We hope you stay safe once the storms arrive.

STEM Senior Meeting - Tuesday, May 17

On Tuesday, May 17, we will meet with all graduating Seniors to review the details for year-end events. They will be coming home with an information sheet regarding Graduation on June 13 at Neumann University.

If you have a Senior, please be sure to ask for the information sheet on Tuesday. Ms. Thomson will also send it via email. Our goal is to keep you completely informed so can make preparations of your own for the big day!

Senior Exams and Final Grades

Seniors must finish their academic responsibilities so they are ready and able to move on. Final exams for Seniors will take place from Tuesday, May 31 through Thursday, June 2. The last day for Seniors to submit work will be Friday, June 3. Parent meetings will be scheduled within the next week for Seniors who are in danger of failing to qualify for Graduation.

Important Dates and Locations

Prom: Prom will be held on Friday, May 27 at The Waterfall in Claymont, DE. Seniors received detailed information regarding Prom before leaving for Spring Break. Families with Prom questions should email Ms. Thomson (

Class Day: Chester Upland School District's annual Class Day will be held on Tuesday, June 7 in the Courtyard at STEM. Invitations to students who will be honored on that day will be coming later this Spring.

Baccalaureate: Baccalaureate will be held on Thursday, June 9 in the newly refurbished auditorium at Chester High. All members of the Class of '22 and their families are invited to attend.

Graduation: This year's CUSD Commencement Ceremony will be held at the Mirenda Center on the campus of Neumann University on Monday, June 13 at 11:00 AM. Details regarding Graduation will be sent home with Seniors on Tuesday, May 17.

Pacifico Scholarship Awardees

Last week, Pacifico Ford hosted their annual scholarship ceremony. This year, students from Philadelphia and Chester received awards totaling over $150,000.

Congratulations to STEM Seniors Olayinka Itabiyi (pictured with his parents) and Zhaniyah Stockman, as well as Chester High Seniors Edward Baker and Naafiah Muhammed who received the scholarships!

Interim Reports

4th Marking Period Interim Reports are now available on Home Access Center. There are just a few weeks remaining, and time is going to fly by. Students whose grades need improvement must start putting in the work now, before it's too late.

Home Access Center (HAC) Sign-Up

The HAC is where you will find your student's report cards, interim reports, and Course Selection. Not only that, visiting the HAC will allow you to check your student's grades and attendance on a daily basis.

Chester Upland Spring Concert

The Chester Upland School District Music Department is hosting a Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 24. Students from all district schools will be showcased, including performances by a number of talented STEM students.

When: May 24 @ 6:00 PM

Where: Chester High Auditorium

Cost: $5.00

Tickets can be purchased through the office at STEM Academy (or any district school). Proceeds will support music education in CUSD!

Course Selection

All STEM students in Grade 9, 10 and 11 should have completed 2022-23 Course Selection last week. Students used Home Access Center to view and select the elective courses they wish to participate in.

We are encouraging families to check in with students about Course Selection. Your student can show you their choices, as well as our current Course Catalog. If you have questions about your student's courses for next year please contact our School Counselors, Ms. Turner-Wright ( or Ms. Hargadon (

Our intention is for students entering grades 10-12 to have their rosters for next year available prior to leaving for Summer Break.


Testing Update

Our final stretch of testing is now here. Beginning Tuesday, May 17, students currently enrolled in English II, Algebra, and/or Biology will take their Keystone exams. All other students will attend their regularly scheduled classes.

If your student is testing, please ensure they arrive to school on time. These tests are mandatory, and students who arrive late will miss additional class time in order to make them up.

Summer Enrichment

The Summer Break is fast approaching. Once again, we will be offering the M.A.R.S. Summer Program for students entering Grades K-8. Please click the link below for more information and to sign up. This link can be shared with any CUSD families who have students entering Grades K-8.

Summer School

STEM students who fail core academic classes will be offered the opportunity to make the course up through the Summer Credit Recovery Program. Please note that students who are transitioned from STEM to Chester High due to multiple failed courses should still complete Credit Recovery in order to maintain progress toward Graduation. Additionally, some students may be required to complete Credit Recovery in order to continue at STEM next year.

Letters will be forthcoming to families of students who must take Credit Recovery courses. There will be a $50 fee per course for Credit Recovery classes.


Vision Screening at STEM

It's not too late to sign your student up for a vision screening here at STEM.

May 23, 2022- Salus University will be at STEM to perform visual screening for students. If a student fails, they will be able to pick glasses with the appropriate prescription the same day. All services are free.

8th Grade Must Re-Apply

Each year, STEM 8th Graders who wish to continue on to high school here must re-apply. Our returning students undergo the same application process as those students who attend other schools. If you have an 8th Grader, please make sure they complete their application as soon as possible.

ID STEM - Increasing Diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

Dr. Thomas Butler from Crozer Health visited STEM on Wednesday, February 2. He met with 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students to speak about his experience becoming a doctor, and encourage them to participate in the ID STEM Summer Program at Crozer Hospital.

During the week of June 27, students have the opportunity to get up close experience with medical professions by attending the program at Crozer. Families, please contact Mr. Bell for more information. There are limited spots, so please reserve soon!
