Congratulations High School Science Olympians!
FSA’s Science Olympians competed at the South Forsyth Invitational on Saturday. This tournament was the nation’s first tournament of the 2020 season and featured both middle and high school teams. Over 600 students competed, including 72 from FSA.
While FSA has enough team members to field two teams of 15 students, the team relies heavily on a few core members. Ashi, Aubrey, Nicole, and Shivam anchored the team by competing in four to five events. This meant they were taking tests from 8:30 AM to 1:20 PM with only a ten minute break each hour. Nevertheless, these students had several standout performances. Aubrey and Ashi placed fourth in Wright Stuff, an event requiring students to build a balsa plane powered by a rubberband. Shivam and Vaani earned fourth place medals in Designer Genes, an event testing students’ knowledge of genetics, molecular genetics, and biotechnology. Ashi, Shivam, and Pranav placed fifth in Experimental Design, narrowly missing 4th place due to a tie-breaker. This event requires students to design, conduct, and write up an experiment on a previously unknown topic using previously unknown materials. For this particular tournament, the topic was Kinematics and they tested the effect of track length on the time it takes a car to reach the ground. Nicole and Maha placed 6th in Water Quality, an event testing knowledge of marine and estuary environments. The brother-sister team of Shivam and Ashi placed 7th in Anatomy, by completing a test on the skeletal, muscular, and integumentary systems. Finally, Shivam and Nick placed 8th in Geologic Mapping, an event demonstrating knowledge and interpretation of topographical and geologic maps.
Science Olympiad coach Julianne Oliver was impressed with the performance of these students. “It’s unusual for students to be this successful across so many fields. Typically, students will specialize in either Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Earth Science Events. It’s amazing that these students did so well across so many disciplines."
FSA Math Team Places 1st as a Team at Luella High School Math Tournament
The Fulton Science Academy varsity high school math team placed 1st as a team at the Luella High School Math Tournament and had five students place among the top 10 individuals in the varsity level!! Our varsity team placed 1st as a team overall among all south & north division teams with 181 points and 42 points leading difference from the closest team. Congrats Math Mustangs!!
Holden W. 1st place individual
Richard Y. 2nd place individual
Nick A. 4th place individual
Brad H. 6th place individual
Kevin Y. 7th place individual
Our Junior Varsity team placed 4th as a team among the north division teams and tied with the 2nd place team performance among the south division teams. This is a HUGE success as five out six students in our junior varsity team were first time competitors! Additionally, Howard X. placed 4th individually in the Junior Varsity division. Congrats Math Mustangs!!
Coach Duzyol said "So proud of our team's hard work and commitment in mathematics! We have come such a long way as a team!!"
Great job Math Mustangs! Keep up the good work!!
Science Olympiad Team competes in Nation’s first Invitational
Both the Middle School and High School Science Olympiad teams competed in the first tournament of the 2020 season on Saturday. The Tournament was hosted by South Forsyth High School and included 20 middle school teams and 30 high school teams. All together, over 600 students competed, including 72 from FSA.
Overall, head coaches Pam Walsh and Gloria Stathos were pleased with the performance of their teams. “Science Olympiad rules were not released until September 1, so students really did not have much time to prepare for this tournament,” said Mrs. Walsh. “Many of our events only met four times before this tournament. We even placed in several building events, which is very difficult to do this early in the season.”
“This first tournament is really all about gaining competition experience,” said Mrs. Stathos. “It’s hard to describe what it’s like for students to compete their first time. They have to arrive on time, at the correct classroom, with the right equipment, to take a test of an unknown format working with a partner they may not know very well. Many of these events require students to complete lab activities and other hands-on events. It can be a real pressure-cooker.”
The high school team will compete at the UGA Invitational on October 26. The middle school team’s next tournament is the Dodgen Invitational on November 16.

Novelis Mentorship Program
This is the 4th year we will be running the STEM Mentorship program at Novelis. It entails 4 lunchtime meetings throughout the school year (2 this semester, 2 next semester) and one shadow day at the completing of the school year. The lunch meetings are generally set up with lunch (30 min) followed by some group activity (1 hour) that works on team building, communication, skill development, etc. The shadow day at the end gives the students an opportunity to see what a day (or half day) looks like working at the Global R&D center in Novelis.
We are looking for students in the STEM field who feel they can benefit from developing a mentee/mentor relationship. I have attached a questionnaire that the interested students can fill out that we will use to try and match the mentors with the mentees. A great way to break into any field it to talk to someone who has lived it- this is a way to network with engineers. If you are interested in applying, please complete the survey that you can get from Ms. Agha and return to Ms. Agha THIS WEEK
The UNICEF Fundraising Committee is Back!

Special thanks to FSA Parent Ilene Strongin-Garry who has reached out to our school to grow this initiative! Be sure to be on the lookout for a date for an informational session presentation from this group!
Below are details of EY’s (Ernst & Young) Corporate Social Responsibility outreach activity aimed at identifying, empowering and inspiring the next generation of girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) careers.
"We have launched a global ‘Women in Technology (WIT)’ program in the US, aimed at accelerating gender parity in the technology space. As part of the program, we have built a mobile platform that engages girls in STEM curriculum. It also engages parents & schools to highlight the need and encourage girls to explore high-growth STEM careers. The program is focused on girls aged 13-18 years old, launching in October 2019 and will connect 1500 girls in Atlanta, 1500 in Seattle and 2000 in Delhi.
Key benefits include:
• High quality new age content: Platform comprises of content from globally renowned institutions like Stanford, Georgia Tech, Columbia etc, it covers new age technology topics. Content is mapped back with the UN Sustainable Development goals and key transferrable skills per OECD
• Fun activities designed to accelerate STEM learning: Content is curated in the form of fun practical gamified activities with rewards to generate STEM interest through experiential incentivised learning
• Exposure to STEM role models: App helps influence STEM value by showcasing career paths of STEM role models through stories to share, mentorship and internship with EY
• Giving back to the society: EY donates monetary equivalent of reward points earned by girls though activities to charities
• Measuring the proof of impact: Measure of the STEM interest, value, competence and transferrable skills that would enable parents and schools to monitor girl’s areas of interest
Here is an App demo outlining the features and functionalities of the WIT Pilot STEM Program.

When: 5:30 pm October 18th, Friday
Where: FSA Cafeteria
What is a Civic Dinner?
A platform that brings people together to have conversations that matter over food, for anyone, anywhere. What better place to talk about Belonging than our diverse FSA community? To top it off, we have food.
Why Belonging?
Humans crave a sense of belonging and connection--to one another and to the places we call home. Unfortunately, many people--including immigrants and longtime residents - feel like they don't belong. Whether through policies or more subtle encounters, messages of exclusion work their way into our minds and social fabric. It is time to come together to explore our own sense of belonging, and how we can create more welcoming communities.

Home Visits; A Great Activity for Your Student, No Matter Their Grade Level!
Here is some feedback from our parents:
- “Early in the school year, a group of teachers took the time to come to our home to meet us and discuss the school program with us. That event brought us back to the time in which schooling was a true partnership between parent and teacher and reaffirmed in our minds that FSA truly cares about the development of our children”
- “We even had two teachers visit us at our home. They were a pleasure to meet and we could clearly see how much they enjoy teaching students.”
- “Thank you very much for your visit and the chocolates yesterday. We enjoyed having you over very much. I also want to thank you for turning math from the most complicated and somewhat scary subject into one of our most favorites.”
- “We all enjoyed your visit last night to our home. It was such a pleasure to informally get to know both of you. My son thought it was really cool that two teachers came to his house. He talked about it the whole way to school this morning in carpool. Personally, I admire the dedication you both have for your jobs. It makes a big difference in a student’s attitude toward school. Your visit left no doubt in my mind that FSA was the right decision for my son.”
- “I just wanted to write on behalf of my husband and I and thank you for visiting our child. He loved having you both come and visit. We appreciate the level of caring and attention that you have consistently shown our family. It is rare to see such a dedication from teachers for their jobs. We can tell that you love teaching and you care for our children. Thank you for visiting our child when he was not feeling well.”
How can I schedule a home visit?
Very simple.
To schedule a middle or high school school home visit: Simply email sduman@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Mr. Duman will be in touch to confirm final details.
Depending on our teacher’s availability, at least two teachers will be together to visit our students and parents at their homes. The best times to schedule a home visit are weekdays after 5:00 pm, and anytime during the weekends, except Sunday mornings. For any questions you have about this program, send an e-mail to homevisit@fultonscienceacademy.org
