What We're Learning
Math - Unit 6 - We are continuing to practice division and are now focusing on what to do with a remainder in a division word problem. We talked about how we can share the remainder, round the remainder up, ignore the remainder, or sometimes the remainder is the answer. The students also learned how to use a protractor! This was very exciting for them! We also learned how to find a missing angle measurement in supplementary and complementary angles using the clues that were given to us. Math is full of puzzles! The test for Unit 6 is tomorrow, Tuesday, March 7th. A study guide went home last week.
Writing - The students did a great job on their Feature Articles. Our new Unit of Study is Opinion. Students have spent the last couple of weeks creating a thesis statement with reasons and examples to support their claims. They will draft these pieces, but will not publish them at this time. Later this week, students will be introduced to literary essays. This week, students will be immersed in high quality picture books with the goal of choosing a book to base their Literary Essay on. This is a piece that will be worked on for several weeks and will be published.
Science - Students continue to work on using scenarios to find the independent variable, dependent variable and constants, and then using this information to write a testable questions using the given sentence stem. Students have also created a section in their Science Notebooks for Testable Questions. They can use this to refer to when given a new scenario. Their goal is to move up the scale to a 3. Students also had a chance to work with Mrs. Adamson's class on a scientific scenario. They enjoyed being able to share their learning!
Social Studies - Our study of Lewis and Clark is over and now students are packing their wagons for the 6 month journey over the Oregon Trail. Students will participate in this simulation for the next couple of weeks, so if you hear about their "children, oxen, or running out of water" they are referring to the trials that they are experiencing on the trail. All are VERY excited about the upcoming journey!!
ASK YOUR STUDENTS ABOUT........
Writing - What did they write their opinion piece about? What was their theses statement, reasons, and examples? What book are they going to use for their literary essay?
Social Studies - Have them tell you about their "family" and what they packed in their wagon for the journey.
Math - Give your child a division word problem and have them interpret the remainder.
Reading - Discuss with them the point of view their independent reading book is written in or share the point of view your own book is written in.
