A Message from the Principal
We have enjoyed a successful start to the new school year. The first week started with pep rallies, guest speakers, and orientation information and activities. Since then, we jumped into classroom instruction while continuing orientation activities, including Club Expo, where students had the opportunity to learn about and sign up for various clubs and activities.
This year we started Freshman Academy in order to provide our students with more support as they transition to high school. The freshmen teachers, counselors, and administrators are working hard with the students to facilitate a successful start to their high school careers.
I feel a special connection with the freshmen this year as I make my own transition to the role of principal. Thank you to the parents and community members who have been so supportive and uplifting. I feel so lucky to continue my career at DHS and serve as principal in the best high school around!

During the Junior and Senior pep rally, students heard from Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge Deborah Fluker. Judge Fluker is a Dacula resident and served for one year as an Associate Judge in the City Of Dacula Municipal Court. In her welcome back message, she shared a great about family, having each other's backs, and presenting yourself well on social media. It was a privilege to have Judge Fluker present on our first days of school!
Student Council is using the hashtag, #W1NGSUP to promote unity and a focus on each and every ONE individual student. Dacula HS Faculty and Staff are striving to continue their focus on success for each and every individual student with the saying "Each and Every One". We are, after all, #OneFamilyOneDacula.

You and your senior will receive a copy of the Class of 2023 booklet, as well as hear information about completing the senior year, post-secondary planning, and financial aid. Scholarship Newsletter – you got to be in it to win it!!
The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school students who will be rising juniors and seniors during the program. The program offers instruction that is significantly different from the typical high school classroom. It is designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders. GHP is held in mid-summer (mid-June to mid-July) as a residential educational experience on a college or university campus. Students attend classes in the mornings and afternoons in specific areas of study, and they participate in a wide variety of social and instructional opportunities every evening. Meals and rooms are provided by the program. The only required and expected costs to the students are travel expenses to and from the interviews; a few basic supplies for classes and dorm rooms; and spending money as desired during the program. Students are nominated for Governor's Honors by a teacher from the previous school year. This year 69 students have been nominated for the Governor's Honors Program in the following areas: Social studies, World Languages, Communicative Arts, Math, and Art.

September 6 - Yearbook Price Increases
The yearbook price is currently $75 but goes up to $80 on September 6! Next semester, the price will increase to $85. Lock in the lowest price and get your yearbook today at https://www.yearbookordercenter.com/jobSearch/displayHome with the code 25024.
September 6 - National Honor Society Applications Due
If your student is interested in being a member of National Honor Society, they should submit their application to Mrs. Guess by the end of the day on September 6.
September 6, 7, 8, and 9 - MAP Universal Screener
MAP Universal Screener testing will talk place September 6th-September 9th for all 9th and 10th grade Language Arts and Math students. This test serves to identify students who are in need of enrichment and/or acceleration. It is an adaptive test, which means that the level of difficulty will change as the student answers each question. Please encourage your student to take their time on this screener and do their best!
September 7 - Registration Opens for PSAT
We will administer the PSAT on Tuesday October 25th at 7:15 am at Dacula High. All first-time 10th graders will receive more information from our counselors along with a copy of the “Student Guide”. No action is needed for our first-time 10th graders. You will receive more information as the test day approaches with your assigned testing rooms and locations. All 9th and 11th graders interested in taking the PSAT must register on www.MyPaymentsPlus.com by October 7th. Registration opens on September 7th and closes on October 7th.
About the PSAT:
The Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT) is a program co-sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation. It is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT. It also gives students a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.
Freshmen and Sophomores who take the test will gain a better understanding of how they might do on the SAT. Scores from the SAT help colleges/ universities evaluate how ready you are for college-level work.
Juniors who take the PSAT may qualify to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program and compete for scholarships.
By October 7th on www.MyPaymentsPlus.com (9th and 11th graders only)
All 9th and 11th graders planning to test will pay a $20.00 registration fee.
Any 11th grader with Free/Reduced Lunch status will show a zero balance (there is no cost) when they register.
September 19 - Hispanic Heritage Night at Dacula Branch of Gwinnett County Public Library
The Dacula Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library will be hosting Hispanic Heritage Night on Monday, September 19 at 6pm. Dacula High School's Spanish Club will have a table set up with activities for children ages 3-12. Click on the image to read more information!

September 24 - Dacula High School Homecoming Dance
Dacula High School's homecoming dance will take place in the Dacula High School Commons Area on Saturday, September 24 from 8-11pm. Tickets will only be sold on GoFan.co and will go on sale on September 1 at 2:10pm. They will be $25 for one week and beginning September 8, ticket prices will go up to $35. Make sure the email address you enter when purchasing on GoFan.co is one that you have access to. Please do not use your school email for tickets as you will not be able to receive the ticket email. Tickets must be validated at the dance for entry. Screenshots of tickets will not be accepted.
September 30 - AP Exam Registration Opens
Registration for AP Exams will begin on September 30th. Three years ago, the College Board implemented changes based on research that showed students' early commitment resulted in greater student performance and success on their AP Exams. All AP exam registrations will take place in the Fall, except for second semester classes in AP Macroeconomics and AP American Government. The registration window will open in MyPaymentsPlus on September 30th and closes on November 4th at 11:59 pm for yearlong courses and first semester courses. Students enrolled in AP American Government and AP Macroeconomics for 2nd semester will have a different registration window (without a late fee) to order between January 9th and March 3rd for those two courses only.
When completing AP Exam registrations in MyPaymentsPlus, please have your student sit with you to ensure your student is registered for the correct exam(s).
Please review the 2022-23 AP Exam Registration information and post the deadline reminder at work or on your refrigerator. There is nothing to do currently except be aware of the upcoming registration window(s) and register your students for their AP Exams during the registration window. 52 Minute Lunch Opportunity
Dacula High School has worked for many years to offer students the opportunity to have a 52 minute lunch period. This opportunity and privilege allows students the freedom to not only take a little bit more time to eat, but also to take advantage of lunchtime tutoring opportunities, visit the media center, make up work, visit the coffee shop, and socialize with friends. Not many schools around the county offer this for students, but we have seen it be successful for many years at Dacula High School.
After Labor Day, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students will have the opportunity to earn their 52 minute lunch back on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. All students will have Study Skills on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Advisement lessons. To earn a 52 minute lunch period, you must be a 10th-12th grader that meets the following criteria:
- passing all classes
- no NTIs in the gradebook
- no referrals that have resulted in OSS or ISS
- 3 or fewer tardies
- no AWOLs
We know ALL students are capable of meeting these expectations and earning this privilege. Data will be pulled again in 3 weeks, so encourage your student to continually meet this expectation throughout the year in order to earn a 52 minute lunch. Students who do not earn a 52 minute lunch this time around will work with their Study Skills teachers to set goals that will help them achieve these expectations the next time around.
Free and Reduced Lunch
Throughout the pandemic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has allowed school systems across the country to provide breakfast and lunch to all students at no charge to families. However, the USDA waivers expired during the summer, and students are required to pay for meals based on their individual eligibility.

Apply today! Applications must be submitted every year (even if you filled one out in the spring, you need to fill out a new one for this school year). Applications can be submitted throughout the year if your family status changes. Note that those eligible for free and reduced priced meals may be able to access other types of assistance including College Board fees waived for AP Exams and PSAT.
Dacula High School Students Awarded with Academic Honors from College Board National Recognition Programs
Dacula High School students excelled in College Board assessments and schoolwork to earn these awards, which colleges use to identify academically competitive underrepresented students.
Dacula High School students have earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. These National Recognition Programs grant underrepresented students with academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them meaningfully connect to colleges and stand out during the admissions process. Colleges and scholarship programs identify students awarded National African American, Hispanic, Indigenous and/or Rural/Small Town Recognition through College Board’s Student Search Service.

Students who may be eligible have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10, or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams; and are African American or Black, Hispanic American or Latinx, Indigenous, and/or attend school in a rural area or small town.
Eligible students will be invited to apply during their sophomore or junior year and will be awarded at the beginning of the next school year. Students will receive their awards in time to include them on their college and scholarship applications.
Dacula's youngest sports program is looking for more athletes. With both head coaches Nick Crabb (Boys) and Vincent Manna (Girls) returning for their second year, the program looks to continue to take steps in the right direction.
