SCSOS Community Update
May 2023
A Message from Superintendent Reusser
May is here and graduation season is upon us! At Sutter County Superintendent of Schools, our first primary goal is to “Always do what’s in the best interest of students.” We are student centered and student focused, which means when graduation rolls around, we know we’ve done our job right.
At the county office, we have several students graduating from our programs. We have 60 of our Sutter County Adult Education students earning their high school diploma. In our Career Technical Education (CTE) courses, we have students graduating from our Certified Nursing Assistant, Dental Assistant, and Phlebotomy programs. In total from the 22/23 school year, there have been 83 CTE students who have either already graduated or will be graduating this month.
We also have several of our Special Education students moving on. There are four Adult Transition Program (ATP) students graduating this year. The primary goal of these classes is to prepare students to function effectively in current and future home, school, community, and work environments. We have 10 students promoting from our high school programs, two of which are receiving diplomas and eight who will be joining our ATP family in the Fall.
We are so thankful to all of our educators and staff on our district campuses and those right here in our district office. Our students couldn’t be where they are today without you. Through direction and hard work, you’ve helped guide students to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. Thank you for all you do.
Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Family Movie Night
The month of May is national Mental Health Awareness and National Foster Care Month. Sutter County Superintendent of Schools, Student Support and Outreach will be participating and hosting several events throughout the month in support of these two awareness campaigns.
Please join us on May 19th to support bringing awareness to these two campaigns at a free community event. Family Movie Night will be hosted at Sutter County Superintendent of Schools. There will also be a resource fair, music and games before the start of the show. See SSO Movie Night flyer for more details.

Shady Creek Update
“I get knocked down, but I get up again…. You are never gonna keep me down.” – Chumbawamba “Tubthumping”
At times, Shady Creek can be the greatest rollercoaster ride of all time! It’s a fast paced ride with ups and downs, loops and corkscrews, flips and dips. It’s the ultimate thrill and the best part is there are no age or height requirements. EVERYBODY GETS TO BE IN ON THE FUN!
After the Winter we just experienced, it’s very fitting to start this month’s update with quote of getting back up after being knocked down. The schools that made up the Shady Creek student body in the month of April were: Rio Del Oro, Cobblestone, Allison, Robla, Paso Verde, Lyman Gilmore, Franklin, Pleasant Grove, Browns, Marcum Illinois, Winship-Robbins, Maxwell and Bangor Schools. So many schools, so many lasting memories and SO MUCH JOY for all.
There are a TON of student letters included in this update! I am always so humbled to receive such treasures from our campers. The letters that our students share are inspiring, heart touching and instant proof that the work happening here at Shady Creek is life changing! I encourage all to check out and read these letters, they may bring a tear to your eye or a smile to your face, no matter what I am sure they will brighten your day. You may notice on one letter from a cabin leader that it is written on foreign currency – It’s from an exchange student and is super precious! As far as photo’s go, this month I included a photo of our indoor acoustic music set, two photos from our “Box Fort Magic” recreation activity and a photo of our fearless leader of the kitchen, Shelly Halama, at our Shady Creek Foundation’s Lip Sync Battle fundraiser. Thank you so much Shady Creek Foundation for ALL you do, we’re so blessed to have your support! On a personal note, I included a vintage photo of Sasquatch and myself taken back at Shady Creek in 2008 and a Little family Easter photo. Last but not least, a photo of our decibel reader at Skit Night this past week. This sound reading was taken as our campers yelled our camp battle cry, “BOOMSHAKALAKA-AAAAAAAAA” to start the night. All I can say is WOW!
Lastly, I would like to end my update with praising the Shady Creek Staff! Every single day, I am beside myself that I am lucky enough to work with such passionate, highly skilled and dedicated people. The staff of Shady Creek are the true magic makers and I would be remised if I didn’t take every opportunity to sing their praises. Students have shared with me that Shady Creek is more magical than Hogwarts and I really do believe them! The wizardry from the Shady Creek Kitchen team as they create meals that make our campers days. These meals are praised by all and consistently receive 5 star reviews. Then, the Maintenance staff of 2ish people that pull off the pure miracle of maintaining all of our breathtaking grounds and facilities. Lastly, the spell binding work from the Naturalists as they lead and inspire all who come to this amazing Outdoor School experience. Week after week, month after month and year after year. Our mission is to create meaningful experiences that last a lifetime, and this amazing crew is the reason we continue to find our success. I also want to shout form the highest peak my love and appreciation to Bethany Thomas, Kindy McCullough, Satty Sangha and Kristi Johnson! These four INCREDIBLE ladies are beyond instrumental to our success this year and I am forever grateful for all of you and all the work you do, whether it’s in the spotlight or behind the scenes. Thank you ladies for putting up with me!
As we approach the month of May I wish all of you the best Spring possible! You all make such a huge difference in the world and I am so fortunate that I get to be in your lives. Don’t ever forget how INCREDIBLE you are. And if by some chance you forgot or need a reminder, you can call or email me anytime. I would love to have the opportunity to tell you how amazing you truly are!

Prom Wear Giveaway
Our Prom Wear Giveaway was a success! In partnership with Yuba Sutter Marketplace, several dresses were donated and we were able to send home 36 dresses with students for free! Some even found their entire prom outfit, including dress, shoes and accessories. We are so excited for these students, some of which would not have been able to attend prom if not for this event!
