Note from the Principal
WOW!!! What a semester we have had this Fall!!! I would like to send out a big thank you to everyone who has helped out at Boone so far this school year. I started this year with the staff by ending all of my emails with, “It is going to be a great year.” This has now been changed to “It is a great year.” And a great year it has definitely been, so far. The Spring will only get better.
I hope everyone has a restful Holiday Break and has a chance to spend time with family and friends to celebrate the season and all that we hold dear. Please remember, however, that the holidays are often a struggle for some and are not always the fun-filled Winter Wonderland we see in all of the Hallmark movies. Try to take time to “pay it forward” and lend a helping hand to someone in need. Individually, we can change an event, but together, we can change the world. It happens one step at a time.
In the next couple of weeks, as we say good-bye to 2017, please take a moment to look back on all of the things that have happened in the past year and the growth that has occurred in all of us, but particularly in our children. Don’t forget to enjoy the moments that lie ahead and be thankful for the opportunities the upcoming year is going to bring. I can’t wait for the Holidays and to start off 2018 with this wonderful school family and community.
Happy Holidays!!!!

Boone’s Career Days are Coming Soon!
January 25-26, 2018
Speakers Needed
We are hosting our fourth annual Career Days on Thursday, January 25 and Friday, January 26 at Boone Elementary School. One of our objectives at Boone, in addition to the district’s goal for college and career readiness, is to promote the importance of career planning. In order for our students to learn more about careers, we are inviting you to speak with our 3-5th graders about your career. If you are interested in presenting to a class or classes on either of these dates please email or Ms. Lozo. Nicole.lozo@austinisd.org 512-841-5376.
In addition to Career Days, PK-5 learn about jobs/careers, college, and individual interests in their classroom guidance lessons with the counselor.
Boone Elementary’s Annual Canned Food Drive
We are going to have a canned food drive from Monday, December 4 until Monday, December 18. We are going to donate to a local food pantry at Abiding Love Lutheran Church. You can find more information about this organization http://www.abidinglove.org/tapestry_food_pantry.html
We are excited to have the opportunity to give back to our community. To make it even more exciting we are going to make this drive a grade level contest to see which grades can bring in the most cans. The grade level winner receives:
Popcorn Party/Extra Recess
Let’s see how many cans we can collect here at Boone for a great cause!
Turn in your donated items to your student’s classroom teacher.
What food should I collect?

Library Lines
Book Fair
Thank you for all who came to Book Fair and for all my awesome volunteers! I could not do it without you. We raised just over $2,000 that will go directly to our library. We will use the money to buy new books and supplies, new technology and STEM/Makerspace materials, new furniture, and to fund our part time library clerk who helps keep this library in amazing shape.

Library Books
All students checked out new books this week. Please make sure these books do not travel out of Austin over our winter break. I want all students to be able to check out in the new year and not have a blocked account. All books are due on Wednesday, January 3.
Students can access Mackin Via or MyOn to read if your family will be traveling. There are thousands of selections to choose from. The link below provides instructions for logging in.

Schlitterbahn Waves of Pages
Tomorrow in your child’s folder (Grades K-5th) you will be receiving a packet for a reading program from Schlitterbahn. It is called Waves of Pages. This is a 10 week reading incentive program. Any child who reads 10 hours for fun (not as a school assignment) between Dec. 18 - Feb. 28 will receive a ticket to Schlitterbahn to use this summer. I encourage all students to participate. I will be entering participants in a contest to win gift certificates for our spring book fair. See the link below for information about the program. You may also use the link to print additional reading logs if needed.
