During a busy first full week of the second semester…
Fifteen HHS students spent the weekend at the Harvard Model UN Conference, representing the country of Jordan, studying global issues, and working for peace with peers from around the world.
Meanwhile, the HHS ski team traveled to Ragged Mountain in New Hampshire for the second weekend in a row. The girls’ and boys’ varsity teams both placed first in races on January 22nd. Then, this past Saturday, the boys placed first and the girls took second. The boys now rank first in the Ski East league standings, while the girls are tied for first.Information on race results and individual and team standings can be found on the league website.
With support from the Nan Project, all members of the HHS faculty participated in a professional development workshop about mental health awareness and suicide prevention on Wednesday afternoon.
Many HHS student athletes had an opportunity to discuss leadership with former Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek during an after-school workshop on Wednesday.
We received news that two aspiring authors, Zoe Epstein ‘23 and Meghan Carr ‘24, joined the list of HHS students to receive Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards.
HHS choral groups delivered terrific performances at the All-Town Chorus Concert at Hingham Middle School on Thursday night.
Our Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Adams, attended the monthly meeting of the HHS PTO on Thursday and provided an update about the many challenges involved with the development of the FY24 school budget.
In a very bittersweet transition, not only for the main office, but for our whole school community, Monica Black began her retirement this week. For more than two decades, her impact on our school has been enormous and wholly positive. She will be greatly missed!
Looking ahead, next week marks the second annual HHS Unity Week. Key events will include:
“Breathe Out” events, organized by a student club that focuses on mental health awareness, throughout the day on Monday 2/6, with an Open Mic Night, sponsored by our music department, at 7 PM that evening;
a special Ninth Grade Advisory session, delivered by older peer mentors, on Tuesday 2/7;
whole-school assemblies on Wednesday 2/8;
a dance performance by OrigiNation, free and open to the public, at 7 PM on Thursday 2/9; this event will be preceded by a barbecue dinner prepared by Morrell’s BBQ, starting at 5 PM in the cafeteria; and
the return of the “Snowball” semi-formal dance on Friday 2/10.
These events, planned by HHS students in several clubs, reflect the overarching vision of the HHS Unity Project, a group that strives to ensure that our school community is characterized by Respect, Inclusion, Safety and Equity (RISE) for everybody.
Not to be overlooked:
Next week is National School Counseling Week and, therefore, the perfect time to say THANK YOU to the incredible crew of counselors here at HHS.
HHS will deliver its annual “Program of Studies Night” on Monday 2/13 at 7:30 PM. Please note the time change, which will accommodate those who wish to attend the School Committee’s budget hearing (6 PM) earlier in the evening. After introductory remarks about course selection in the auditorium, parents will have an opportunity to meet with department directors and coordinators in the school cafeteria. Student volunteers will provide building tours for any interested parents.
Registration is open for the preschool program run by the HHS Child Development classes. We still have a few openings, but they won't last long!
Seniors should take the time to explore the many Town of Hingham scholarship opportunities.
Finally, the daily notices, the full school calendar, and the student newspaper, can always be viewed on the HHS website. Look for details on the website and in our weekly PTO newsletter.
