Cardinal Family Newsletter
It's A Great Day to Be a Cardinal!
Parent Newsletter: December 3
Dear FFMS Students, Parents and Guardians:
It is hard to believe we are in December. The time between Thanksgiving and the winter holidays goes by so quickly. As the holiday season approaches excitement naturally builds in children. The PTO is sponsoring the Santa Workshop to give the students an opportunity to shop for family members and friends. This will be during the week of December 10th. Also, please note that the Winter Concert has been changed to December 19th at 7:30 pm.
Have a great week.

A Five-step Process Can Help Your Child Make Better Decisions
Want your middle schooler to make more responsible decisions? Encourage her to rely on this five-step process whenever she’s faced with a dilemma:
1. Assess the situation. Your child can’t make a wise decision if the issue at hand seems murky. So remind her to clearly define it by asking herself, “What’s the main thing I’m concerned about?”
2. Explore her options. What are some ways your child could handle the problem? Have her make a mental list, then narrow it down to the three most sensible choices. This list-making step is critical because it illustrates that there are usually several options for solving a problem.
3. Consider the disadvantages. Have your child think about the cons of each of her top three ideas. If a certain option has a particularly serious consequence, this is a good time to rule out that option.
4. Consider the advantages. Now ask your child to figure out the pros of her top choices. Does one option have major advantages over others? Then that may be the winner.
5. Decide on a solution. Now that she’s weighed the pros and cons of each possible option, your child can make her decision with confidence.

Best Practice: Practicing Internet Safety
What can I do to make sure my child is using the Internet safely and responsibly?
- Know what technology your child uses and the sites he visits.
- Teach your child that part of being a good digital citizen means treating people with respect, the same as she would in person. If someone online is being hurtful to others, she should tell a grown-up.
- Use the parental controls in your devices and apps. Most security software and browsers have controls that let you block websites in certain categories.
- If your child uses instant messaging or social networking sites, he should personally know everyone on his friend or contact lists.
- Ask your child to tell you (or another trusted grown-up) if he sees or receives anything that makes him uncomfortable.
- If you install Internet monitoring and filtering software, tell your child that you have it—and that you might check on her activity sometimes.
- Talk to other parents about Internet safety and responsible Internet use. Discuss your families’ rules, ask about theirs, and agree to look out for each other’s kids online!
