Amy (Grade 3)
"Storyworks Jr. is great in helping remove some of those potential barriers when it comes to reading. It comes with many tools to help remove some of these. Most of the stories come with an audio or video read-a-loud that we use at least twice a week along with reading from the text itself. It also includes a vocabulary slideshow which I use to introduce to vocab before we start reading. Each word has it's own slide with a picture or a short video clip to illustrate the word. These are great discussion tools.
In all subjects, I like to find my own supplemental videos to support what we are learning!"
"I have been using StoryWorks Jr. with students more often because it provides great vocabulary instruction with pictures and videos for the students to relate to and allows the students to hear the text auditorily. I print out copies of the story/worksheet for them to follow along visually as well. This helps for comprehension challenges and also challenges with decoding. I will also read the questions aloud as students complete worksheets to provide UDL solutions for students.
After we complete a lesson, I sometimes develop an online "quiz" through a program called Quizizz that I can provide examples with context clues, visuals, etc. to help the students review the vocabulary concepts and generalize them to examples beyond the story. I've attached an example of one of those quizzes here.
For the quizzes, you can unshuffle the questions so I can read them aloud as the students go through them together and know they are on the same question and also remove the time constraints so students do not feel rushed."

Barrier-not able to read/decode content in math
Solution: "When I am in Courtney's room for math-I sit with a small group to help students read text in their workbook that is above their level and also give them strategies to work through word problems that are above their reading level."
Chris (Gr. 4)
"I use the smart board to enlarge the Go Math book so the students can see better. I practice using small group instruction in Math with a small group of students. I make the font is large enough to read when I give out handouts or create a handout. I try to space it out so it isn't so cluttered."
